I think a Zoom H4 is a great place to start. Has XLR connectors & phantom power for professional mics should you want to use them. Has nice internal mics that work pretty well. Can act as an external ASIO soundcard/audio interface for a mobile recording/PC solution.

Zoom H2 may be cheaper if the XLR connectors are not your style and you think you may stick with internal-mic casual recording.

Get your patch on.........Nice holiday gift from the parents.

If you are going to festivals, I would suggest in a nice patching cable first before investing in some mics or using the internals.
A six pack a day, that's all we ask.
