Title: Need Clean Gain for Acoustic / Classical
Post by: BobW on December 20, 2004, 10:48:55 PM
I love my T-Mod FR-2, and I don't want to mess with it.

I find that I need about 12 to 24db more gain for my classical and acoustic stuff.
I'm thinking Mini-MP or V2, or possibly an MP-2 or the Shure version of it.

Anyone with any thoughts on a portable, light, clean pre that will run on 12vdc ?

I'd get the V2 no doubt about it. It's the cleanest through mic pre for our purposes at all gain stages... the mp2 is very colored and from what I understand it's sonics do not hold up at high gain levels. The Mini-Mp is cleaner but I still prefer the V2. I've used both.

So what would I expect a good, used V2 to set me back ?

$625 or so... maybe less. where do you live? I wonder if there's one local you can borrow.

Hey what is this thing ? (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3278&item=3770123208&rd=1#ebayphotohosting)
I thought it was a suppository, but it's some form of mic preamp, Stellavox MP5 ?

Hmmm, offhand I don't have any close friends up there that still have gear to recommend you to. I'd ask here though for sure...

Ias for that ebay find...  have no idea, one of the real nerds is going to have to chime in on that one :P

For what it's worth, I've seen Doug Oade post about this subject. He prefers the Mini-Me for classical. But, YMMV...

V2 all da' way.
I would say Millenia media pre but it is not a field unit.

Yeah, Neve would be nice, but impractical.

Got to have P48 and run on 12V, if the T-Mod doesn't get me all the gain that I need.
Small and light would be a huge plus.
