Topic: First outing w/the Peluso CEMC6 stereo kit....

Hey all..

So I went out last night with the new Peluso stereo kit that just arrived.  I recorded Hairy Apes BMX (awesome band, btw.  definately check them out, you'll be pleasantly entertained and surprised, as I was).
Any way...
I was 10' off the stage, dead centered running XY w/the card caps.

TIGHT sounding mics!!  Real solid in the bottom end with authority and not an ouce of slop.  The high end sounds not overly bright nor harsh at all.  Realistic, I guess.  Detailed, but not overly critical or anything like that.  Overall no coloration to what I heard last night.  And being so close to the source, there is a lot of stage mix going on. There is some great imaging and depth in the recording as a result.  Layes of musicains in the dead center spot (drums, bass behind and saxy behind the other percussionist).  I'm quite impressed.

BTW, the mics are nice.  The kit rocks.  4 sets of caps, super fat shock mounts (add these to the list of bulletproof mounts...$35!).  The case looks like it should be handcuffed to a secrete angent.  Even has locks. 
The guns themselves are about 480 sized, maybe a little fatter.  I"ll post some pictures of them shortly.

fwiw, this kit would retail for just over $1300.  a bargain, if you ask me.  Especialy if the other caps measure up as nice as the cards.

shit...I dont know.
at that range last night, every mic would sound nice.  If I had a pair of mk4s handy, i would have run them in the other stereo pair.  I try to imagine how a shoeps source would sound, but who knows throught the R4s mic preamps...which are pretty impressive, i'm finding.  impressive for edirol any way.
I'm sure i'll get a chance to put them head to head w/a pair of schempzies eventualy.

Too bad I couldn't make it back up to the church for the second night of Hairy Apes. They played till 2 am, and I got home about 3:30. Getting up for work was damn near impossible, and I sleepwalked through the day.

Glad to hear you were able to get out of the house.

I'm still mourning the loss of the R-4, but if I pull a good tape @ Black Crowes tonight I'll start to get over it.

Not sure if John cleared off Oshe and Hairy Apes from Wednesday, but Oshe's set was 184's>V3>DA-P1>R-4 coax in

and Apes was LSD2>MiAGi II>R-4

the kit came with omnis, wide cards , card and hypers.
2 shock mounts
crappy windscreens, but no biggie there.

The shock mounts are very impressive.  I like them better than the ATs, or just about anything else I can think of. If only they came in black...

Check out SoundPure for their Peluso selection, including the CEMC6 pair.  You have to email for pricing, but they also have an ebay store where they are selling the CEMC6 pair for $535 with card caps.  I have no affiliation with them, just been looking around for the best price on these mics.  Could be replacing my current mics if they are as good as Nick says.

the pair, with any capsule you want for $500odd is a great price.  $170 per pair of caps after the fact.

Has anyone tried using this or similar shockmount to hold a single shure vertical bar with a pair of mics? it maybe too much weight or too loopsided.

I got an email today from John Peluso, he said the active cables are indeed in the works but he doesn't know when they will be completed. He also said that they are developing a minature microphone system as well. He didn't elaborate much and said that they just started working on the active cable design.

the CEMC series condensers are really sweet sounding.  I'm currently uploading a nice onstage XY recording w/the wide-card caps.  Its Charlie Hunter...will be up on archive shortly.

Wanting to experiment in my living room, I set up the CEMC6 and my Audix 1290 for a side by side comparison. I had the Audix in DIN and the CEMC6 in XY. The CEMC6s are much hotter than the 1290s. With the Audix, I had the SBM cranked to 10 to get levels of -6.  The CEMC6 achieved the same peak level at only 6 on the SBM dial. The published sensitivity specs for the CEMC6 are 10 mVPa, but 14 mVPa for the Audix. Could the different configs produce this drastic a difference, or is somebody fudging the numbers?

Yeah, they seem a bit flimsy but I've taped 4 or 5 shows outdoors and even though there were some pretty strong windgusts during some of those shows I've never heard any wind noise (always had the big DPAs on hand just in case, though).  I'm not sure if thats due to the mics or the screens. Yeah, they're pretty hot mics.  Nice that there are -10db and -20db pads on them.  Which pattern are your Audix mics using?  Are they also cards?

Nick:  are your wide-cards remeniscent (appearance-wise) of, say, km184's?  By that I mean that they look totally different than then cards or hypers, the wide-cards are more open-faced without any metal protecting the element/screen.

I used the hypers this weekend for the first time. NICE sounding.  very tight.  great rejection.

I'll be running my omni caps outside this summer for sure.  I've got 2nd row center taper tickets for the BIG SUMMER CLASSIC when they roll through Greatwoods. I"ll be sure to run a good omni setup that night.  clamp on a few stands and space them out 3-4'.

I'll have opportunities to really test the shit out of these mics.  I"m very impressed with them thus far.  I think they sound fantastic...at any price, but especialy for the money they cost.

Drew, I was running cards for both the Peluso and Audix, so that's not it.  Also, glad to hear the w/s do work, I'll try them at an event with a tent pavilion instead of using the big Shures.

FWIW, I picked up some of those Joe Meek (Schoeps knock-off) mounts & they fit the Peluso's nicely.  The one thing I'd worry about is that even though the mount is made of somewhat soft plastic it still might scratch the mics since there's not much room to work w/ while installing the mic bodies into the mount.  These might turn out to be much more versatile than the trusty old AT8410's since they're so much smaller.

warm to neutral, def. don't use a bright pre IMO.

the peluso shock mount has got to be the best i've had for field use.  fucking unbreakable.  beefier than the AT and it actualy holds the mic in the horizontal position w/o having to compensate for the elastic "sag".

the peluso mics, i dont find them to be dark at all....and I dont find them overly bright either.  I would stick with Drews recomendation though.  thats nice and general.  what mics like a really bright preamp any way?

I'm sure they would sound nice into a V3.  I"ll have to try that out sometime.  they sound great through the R4, which I find to be pretty neutral.
