Topic: studio projects lsd2..?

well apparently the price is right on these, so i am thinking of acting now... i dont have a preamp, or anything else for the thing, but i have always wanted to run a single point stereo mic (to run on-stage and/or overhead - to record a full band, live)... is this something would even sound good..? is it worth buying now, just to sit on it for six months or so until i get a preamp, etc. all lined up..?

It's a great mic, and sounds awesome on stage.

I'd wait till you have the gear to run behind it though. It's not like they are going to suddenly become unavailable.

I wouldn't say that but the transformers provide fixed gain, which may not provide enough gain in certain situations. As mentioned before, this will need 48v phantom. It is just a question of using several solutions vs. an all-in-one box, to get the mic everything it needs to function properly.

When I first got mine I ran it with a deneke PS-2 and transformers. Sounds good that way. I think it is a perfect match with the T-mod UA-5.

As long as you give it phantom, any pre will work. Not sure of any gear that would be a bad match, but be aware it needs more gain than any other mic I've ever run, but that could just be an LD thing.

I find the lsd2 to have a nice and tight bass (some think it's a bit lean).  Sounds nearly ideal to me through a t+mod ua5. 

I'd think you'd be in great shape running the lsd2 >phantom power (ps2?)>line transformers > modsbm1. 

Agreed, a m148 would rock with this mic, perhaps a psp2 would have a similar effect.  Assuming you're still running a modsbm1, I say start with line transformers and a phantom power box

Sounds like you do indeed have an interest in it and the LSD2 is imho a bargain at this price, so go for it

the denecke ps2 can generally be found used for under $100 -- I haven't priced/used line transformers but believe a pair of good ones can be found used for that amount or less -- Todd R can probably clarify for you on the line transformers as he's run a set between his akg c61/jk labs box and his modsbm1. 

I now recall that you're running a pdaudio -- one other thought is that a mod UA5 will (I'm pretty sure) output a 24/48 or 24/96 digital signal to the pdaudio.  You might want to keep an eye out for an oade tmod ua5 (or an oade digimod ua5 which Doug would upgrade/mod)  as a cheap(ish) all-in-one solution if you're interested in trying hi-res recording.

With the LSD2 and UA-5, I have to set it at 3 or 4 o'clock and peak @ -3. With my Oktavas or AKGs I'd get between -3 and 0 without having to go past 2 or 3 o'clock. Not a huge difference, but for a quiet show w/transformers you'd have problems.

Go ahead and get it. Its not like your losing the total investment if you don't like it or use it enough. I love it but it may only get out of the house 6 times or so this year.

This is not the thing to get if it is your only mic, but what an awesome tool to have for the right circumstance. I use mine a couple times a month, but not as often as other mics.

finding a t-mod can be tough -- might be better off looking for an oade digimod and getting doug to t-mod it for ya.

Also, I wouldn't rule this out at all for stand-based fob use.  Though it's surprisingly large, since it's oriented vertically, it's actually pretty unobtrusive, and if covered by speaker cloth can actually be lower profile than an active capsue-based setup.

Finally, I find it to be surprisingly versitle, especially when run in mid-side mode and mixed down post-show.

for blumlein, both patterns are figure 8, positioned in an X
for mid side, one is figure 8 one is card. however i don't tihnk it matters whether top or bottom is which

for mid side, Doug Oade suggested to me a while back that the top capsule should be used for the mid (forward pointing card) and the bottom cap be used for side (sideways pointing figure .

Doug opined that since the space above the top cap is open, it could provide a more open/full sound.

 i have listened to about 10 recording made with these mics and i must say, they have all impressed me; the railroad earth recording that i linked before is probably in my top 10 favorite audience recordings .  i'll go for a V3 first, though.  i've got to take some more time to figure out what equipment is ahead for me.

when you get the m1290s, i think you will notice that they have a VERY bright high end, almost too much at times.  Excellent midtones, especially guitar.
