Should I have the Windscreens on or off while taping??
« on: July 07, 2006, 11:20:10 AM »
Hey all,

Just wondering as in the past I taped using a SONY ECM-719 mic and now I have Cardioids (CMC-19's).

I'll be taping indoor arena shows (upcoming gigs I'm going to) and wondered if to have them on or off and what they do/effect the recording.

Thanks for any help,
Simon.

on, I once made an excellent indoor recording of Ratdog that has wind noise throughout it from someone blowing smoke up into the air throughout the show, screens would have avoided that

In my opinion, you should always leave your windscreens on your mics whenever you are taping. They will protect your mics from smoke, dust, indoor ventilation systems, etc... and of course always use them outside to prevent wind rumble on your recordings.

The only effect the windscreens may have is that they may attenuate some of the high end, but it won't be noticeable unless you are using some extremely heavy windscreens.

Ditto for always using screens...

I actually own 3 pair, the Schoeps 5B screens (http://www.posthorn.com/S_pops.html#b5) for indoors, the DPA screens (http://www.sonicsense.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=SSI&Category_Code=WNSCRNS) for normal outdoor shows or indoors with heavy fans, and the big ass Shure WS81 screens (http://www.jacksmusicfactory.com/default.asp?productid=1086_Shure_A81WS_Windscreen) for heavy outdoor wind.

Between the 3 I'm covered for anything.
Right now nothing...in the past: Schoeps CMC6, AKG 480, AKG 460, AKG 414, MBHO 603a, Neumann KM100, ADK TL>Schoeps MK4, Schoeps MK2, Schoeps MK41, AKG ck61, AKG ck62, AKG ck63, Neumann AK40, Neumann AK50, MBHO ka200>Lunatec V2, Lunatec V3, Apogee Mini-Me, Oade M148, Oade M248, Sound Devices MP2, Sonosax SXM2>Sony (mod)SBM1, Apogee AD500>D7, D8, D100, M1, R1, R4, R09, iRiver HP120, Microtrack
