Batt Box with bass rolloff, or just EQ?
« on: January 24, 2009, 09:48:24 PM »
In my recent stealth recordings, I've had a problem with excessive bass. I've easily fixed this by EQing in Adobe Audition later on, but I was wondering if a battery box with bass rolloff would do a better job? Or are they both essentially the same? I'm using CMC-8 mics, with a 12v battery box to a Sony RH1. Thanks

personally I never roll off.  If you can do it in post do it there.......you can roll off there before you burn to disc.  I always look at it like this, you can't put back what isn't there........

i got the other way
roll at the show
you can screw up your recording if the bass is to much and it doesn't get to the editing software
Mics - AKG ck61/ck63 (c480b & Naiant actives), SP-BMC-2
XLR Cables - Silver Path w/Darktrain stubbies
Interconnect Cables - Dogstar (XLR), Darktrain (RCA > 1/8) (1/8 > 1/8), and Kind Kables (1/8f > 1/4)
Preamps - Naiant Littlebox & Tinybox
Recorders - PCM-M10 & DR-60D

I wouldn't roll off any bass unless your recording at a venue you've recorded before, and you find there is just too much bass to make the recording listenable..

I agree to limit in post and in rare occasions as mentioned, if you know the venue has excess boom, maybe a lil' rolloff.

Check thru other threads.  I know there has been lengthier discussions re: rolloff.

One thing of notice, I am pretty sure that using rolloff is not a way to prevent distorrtion from bass.  If it's happening, it's likely in the capsule of the mic.  Again, there's more on the subject in another thread.

As with most cards they seem to lack bottom end anyway so reducing it further does nothing except make it sound more like an Am radio.. So no if you have problems with the low end with distortion then its your mics. And bass roll off will not fix it. You can try eq.

I don't get *enough* bass when using the SP-CMC-8's. I can't imagine rolling off anything.

Really? Using Cards or Omnis? I'm using the Omni's and the last show I recorded was very very very bassy. The show itself had a ton of bass...though I think it's definitely more pronounced on the recording.

I use Card caps mostly on the SP-CMC-8's.  I have used omni caps a fews times and was pleased with the results. I mainly use those outdoor and when wind noise may be an issue.

I too run CMC-8 omnis - plenty of bass response in my experience.

Agreed. That's what I do.
However, there's another side of this subject that I've never totally understood. I've created a thread about this matter not too long ago. That's the one I'm talking about http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,109151.msg1457271.html#msg1457271
That's the thing. The average bb with roll-off interacts in strange ways with the rest of your gear, so if you, for instance, set your roll off to 80db, this is not what you may end up with in terms of filtering. I mean, those things are not reliable and their settings are not to be trusted.

I don't use rolloff when running cards (I tried once, but it sounded really tinny), but do a 195hz rolloff with omnis. I've found that still leaves a good sounding bottom-end, but not overpowering. I had to run omnis mic-in/no rolloff once when my batterybox crapped out, and that turned out super-bassy.

Here's a sample with cmc-8 omnis rolled @ 195:

Here's the same sample with CA-11 cards, no rolloff:
