Recording from the floor
« on: May 07, 2009, 11:08:43 AM »
General admission, standing room, on the floor in an arena. Strictly stealth.

I don't know how close I'll be able (or willing) to get, but I'd like some general tips for this situation. I'm tempted to go for about half-way back, but I may have no control over this.

I'm trying to trade for the usual seats in the bowl, but if I have to, how do I do it?

Also, this will be my very first tape with my new R-09HR - just to add another variable into the mix!

Any help is appreciated!

I'd go FOB, center. How much FOB all depends on your ears.  I have been in the soundboard area for some shows where I thought the sound was better 10-20 feet forward.  Crowd always plays a part where I stand...having to steer clear of chatter and drunks.

You may want to edit your post about the hat mount.  That's a little more info than we like to reveal here.

Since you aren't on a 15' stand, think about noise around you... like he said... steer clear of the chatter and drunks.
Alternate strategy... "stack tape", off to the side, right in front of one stack, this will ensure a high signal to noise ratio, even if not so much a stereo image.

I stack tape with cards as a last resort when I am not in an acoustically friendly building and/or are avoiding chatter & drunks.  It's a pity to lose that stereo image in a large venue, but you make up for it other ways.

Wear earplugs.

You can get earplugs designed for reasonably linear frequency response. Anyone regularly attending concerts should wear them. To be honest, it's a far better experience at a loud concert wearing earplug, you feel the bass, hear perfectly well and feel more relaxed and comfortable.

...and you get to keep your hearing  ;D

Wear earplugs.

Agreed. I never go to loud shows without them.

Double QFT.  Etymotic's are definitely worth their weight in gold.

I don't want to give away any stealth tactics, but just be sure that you get your mics as high as possible, no matter where you tape from.

Put yourself in the spot where you form the third point on an equilateral triangle. You'll be as far from stage as the PA is spread apart. This is a good place to start.
