DAT to JB3 possible?
« on: December 04, 2004, 08:54:27 PM »
I'd like to transfer a DAT recording to my JB3 but am unsure how. Can it be done? And if so, is there any harm that can be done to recording quality?

it can be done.

you have three options.

the first and best option would be to run an optical cable from your dat to the jb3 and record the .wav just like you were at a show. This will be a perfect digital copy.

the second option would be to run a coax cable from your dat into a Hosa format converter and then optical from there into your JB3 and record. If you use a bitperfect format converter like the well known hoas boxes you should have a perfect digital copy. With some of the lesser boxes there is a chance for dropped samples which may or may not be audible but are undesirable.

the third option would be to run an analog line out of your dat into the analog line in on the jb3, done this way you will need to set the levels on the jb3. since it is an analog transfer you will suffer some loss in quality as the a/d in the jb3 is average at best.

I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

to make it easier you might be able to take your ua-5, run a coax in from your dat, and an optical out to your jb3.  i've never done this, but i have used the ua-5 as a D/A before, so i would imaging you could do the same with that.  good luck.

I have limited experience with the the ua5 but this may work. FWIW - In this instance the ua5 would really just be a digital pass through, there would be no d/a conversion involved.

I believe this would work, but I'm pretty sure it will resample the digital signal even if you're not changing sample rates.  Not a huge deal for some, while others have a problem with resampled transfers.

I appreciate the tips.

I'm not sure what I'll try but how would I hook an optical to the D8?

The UA5 method seems easiest but I am concerned about resampling.

Sony used to (still makes?) a 7-pin / optical cable, similar to the 7-pin / coax cable.  Check the Archival Info forum for a post including part #s.

If only for experimental purposes, I'm trying the coax > UA5 > optical method. It's all hooked up but I'm getting no levels on the JB3. I'm running 7 pin out of dat and coax IN then optical out to the JB3. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

well, im almost positive that the coax is just an OUTPUT not an INPUT

if i'm not wrong, i believe bean was refering to the cable, not the ua-5. i'm prety sure the one way co-ax 7- pin cable is input only.  would take a daisy-chain cable to get output, co-ax or optic.

My 7 pin has in/out. It's the one made by Pro Digital.
But I've tried both ends and still get nothing.
