SP-CMC-8 > ??? > JB3 (optical) stealth
« on: March 19, 2004, 02:49:08 AM »
This is probably going to be off in the distant future, but I'm wondering what would be a good, small, fairly inexpensive power/A/D module.  Price is probably the most important factor, but I'd love to hear any advice you have :).

i know you know that I know that you know that the ad-20 doesn't provide power ;)

but with the CMC-8s perhaps you'll have a battery box instead.  regardless, I recommend the mp-2

I might but I'd obviously rather have as few boxes as possible.  An mp-2 would provide power for them then?

the mp-2 provides phantom power, just like the ua-5.

however, the stock SP mics do not accept phantom power.  There are options 3 fold.

1) get the $100 upgrade from SP for the power adapters. This provides modules so the mics can plug into the mp-2, ua-5, etc.  looks like this

2) do this mod yourself.  Leegeddy and Hoyt from the boards have both done it, except they used mini-xlr connectors in place of the 1/8" connectors.

3) buy the ES943 (SP-CMC-8) mics from someone other than Sound Professionals.  They will come with in-line XLR power adapters.  You just won't have the option of switching between phantom and battery power like you do with the previous 2 options, unless you go with the AT853a which are similar but not the same.  The AT853a mics have the option of battery or phantom power, and they have interchangable caps, but are a little wider.  The AT853Rx mics are also a good option if you want interchangable caps and know you will only want to provide phantom power.

mod sbm1

would the pre in the sbm1 power these? if so you could get the "24 bit mod" and the pre mod

really small all in one box with a great a/d stage, but the pre is disabled with only the 24 bit mod

He said he wants "as few boxes as possible."  Battery box + AD-20 is 2.  Plus, 48V phantom powered mics sound better.  Atleast the sp-cmc-4s do.

dustin - no, the sbm-1 doesn't provide power.

Duh, that's why SP sells an AD-20-MINI that has an extra 9V battery plus a 1/8" input. It works great. That way you don't have to F around with 48V phantom, especially if you are going to stealth. End of topic :)

you must remember that any phantom power mod will increase the performance of the mics.  The SPL of the mic is increased by 13 db, and the dynamic range increases by 13 db as well.

Why even use a modded sbm1?  I would think that stock would be perfect. It'll power the mics (the sbm1 provides plug-in power, unless I'm absolutely retarded), and has a decent preamp +A/D.  Or get the pre-mod for it, but not the "24-bit mod" so the pre is still active.

Or is that what you were saying, and I'm just retarded?

I always thought the sbm1 would be a great companion to a JB3.  Except for that 7pin->optical cable.  But the price for used SBM's seems to be coming down a bit, so it's a feasible option..

Schwilly, the mp2's just a straight pre + phantom, right?  I like the sound of the mp2, but think he might be better off with an external A/D like the AD-20 or sbm1.

Here's a vote for the modAD-20.  I own one, but not the one SP sells.  Much better than running a battery box > preamp > recorder. ;)

While the SBM-1 provides plug-in power through the mic pre inputs, plug-in power isn't enough to power the SP-CMC-8 mics.  I forget the actual voltage of the Sony plug-in power, but it's too low.  Something like 1.5v or some such, but don't remember exactly.

Nah, it has a mini plug input and an extra battery slot, providing battery power to mics the SP at933s I have.  See attached.
