Topic: 4060's and R-09

Just trying to get this right, i have a couple acoustic shows coming up, Jackopierce and Jewel, Do I need to run my pre or BB or should the 4060's be fine right into the R-09 Mic IN?

This probably isn't much help but:

I don't have 4060's but when I taped Nickel Creek (acoustic) with my R09 and BB into Line in, the levels needed to be boosted post editing by 18 dB.   I just invested in a pre so I don't have this issue again.

The 4060's are sensitive so they don't need a pre-amp as much as some other mics (including 4061's). It will definitely  improve the sound if you use a pre-amp.

I don't think the R-09 can provide enough power for the 4060's to work their best. It will record a sound, it just won't be as nice as using a battery box.

So my vote is 4060 > BB > R-09 if you need small. 4060 > MMA6000 > R-09 if you want a better recording. I use 4060 > MMA6000 > JB3 and I have no trouble getting that into any venue. You can easily hide the MMA6000 and I just walk in with the JB3 in my bag and call it "My MP3 player."

I'm thinking about getting a R-09 or MTII, so I can have a smaller setup (the JB3 doesn't really fit in a pocket very well).

You're external preamp is going to be higher quality than the preamp in your recorder.  I'd use it and go line in.  The church preamp will give you whatever gain it has and be very clean.  The gain on the recorder will probably start to show noise after a certain level.  That's the thing about built in preamps on recorders.  Some are very decent like the Sony MZ-RH1 and some are mediocre.  I know on the iRiver H120 up to about 20dB or so sounds OK but after that it get's a bit noisy.  So if I record somethingg quiet I'll use my SP preamp and can get up to 50dB of very clean signal.
