camcorder import/capture
« on: November 24, 2008, 10:43:51 PM »
so i have been trying to import some video for this guy at work
his camera is playing back the tape 100% on the pop out screen
however the capture is not coming in 100% on the comp
it will go for a bit then the comps screen turns blue and a new file/scene is started depending on how long the blue screen is there depends on how much is missing from the capture
but like i said the pop out screen is still playing 100% without issue or skips
any ideas??
thanks

ps running imovie and firewire
fast forward and rewind the tape and that didn't help
the tape was brand new and used once, a 2nd tape was used the same day and imported perfect

are you capturing to the computers hard drive?  And give yourself at least an extra 20% GB for the size of the capture.  Firewire and imovie likes it when going directly to the HD of the computer.  And make sure the file saves in the " movies" section of your files.  Dont save it to the desktop. Also the blue screen appears at tape breaks or you can set those tape breaks manually under edit.

With my video capture software, what you see in the popout is completely irrelevant and independent from the video capture that's laid onto the harddrive of your computer.  You'd think they were linked, but they're not.

Having said that, I'm not familiar with any of the software you mention, but have some experience with video capture.  My first reaction is buffer underrun...or whatever it's called when the computer can't keep up.

I'm told that video capture is one of the most RAM intense things that can be performed on a PC, so I'll offer several soft solutions first and then several hard solutions.

'SOFT' Solutions

- Re-start your computer and then immediately perform your capture.  Sometimes that works for me...a re-start seems to de-clutter my PC.  Not sure at all what's going on there but my machine will sometimes seem to run better after a re-start than if it hasn't been restarted for a few days.

- Close ALL applications (including the video popup if possible) and leave video capture as the only activity being performed by the PC.  No multi-tasking because that's gonna scarf-away RAM from the video capture task.  (This would include closing the onscreen display of the capture that you mention, because that adds nothing to the actual capture of the stream onto the harddrive and also sucks RAM.)

-  Defragment your harddrive so the harddrive doesn't have to search for free disc space to place the captured data.

- Finally, get all the crap out of background on your PC...get rid of cookies and spyware that resides in background and slows down PC operations.  Run Ad-Aware or equivalent.

FWIW, I've had video captures run fine on my computer until I got onto the PC and started surfing the net.  That ODed the machine...the machine wasn't able to keep up and after that I started getting blue screens in my video...or balky video captures where the video freezes up for a few seconds at a time while the buffer underrun cleared.

'HARD' solutions...

First, my video capture card is a Hauppauge card with video processing chips on board the card.  That's one of the very best things you could do for video processing because then the video tasking is not competing with onboard RAM for processing.

Second, buy and install some more RAM chips.

Finally, make sure you're performing your video capture on a machine that has a fast microprocessor.  A dinosaur computer simply isn't gonna be fast enough for video capture.

Hope these suggestions help.

i have confirmed that my issue is with this specific mac  >:(
i am pissed because i can add it to the list of other issues this mac has had

i figured it out last night when i tape wouldn't capture correct
i freed more space and still had issues
switched to my powerbook (which has less space, less ram, slower processor) and it catured 100% perfect

On that first tape did the guy record continuously the whole time or did he stop, play back some, and then start again?  If you do not use blank search to find the next available recording sopt and instead go past where it stopped and start recording again this will happen.  A new timecode is created every time it starts recording again and if you import/capture software is not set to record continuously it will detect a new scene at the start of each time code.

you probably already know this but also make sure you dont have the " energy saver" on you dont want the computer screen to go to sleep during capture.

Try using Image Capture instead of iMovie. It's included with OSX and I've found that with some troublesome tapes it seems to do the trick.

Image Capture should be in your Applications folder.

Are you using the camera controls or the onscreen controls to initiate playback, fast forward, etc?

non stop taping
energy saver off
never tried image capture - never heard of it doing video, just for pictures
using the on screen controls to start and stop import

example of my tape import from sunday
imac intel
1gb ram
98gb of free space
1hr 10 minutes tape
played back on the screen perfect - no drop outs of any kind
imported as 15 different "clips" with the screen turning blue between the end and start of a new clip
(again the cameras pop out screen was still playing perfect)

same camera, same tape
powerbook g4
512 ram
19gb of free space
imported perfect as 2 clips (at the 1hr mark it is set to start a new clip)

on the one that it wont capture i have had that happen.
Do you have any firewire plugged into any of the ports?
are you saving it to the computers HD first?
are you saving it to imovie?  not to the desktop

my .02 cents
