Title: Newer Alternatives to Tekkeon 3450i?
Post by: down2earthlandscaper on May 30, 2015, 09:44:22 PM
The Tekkeon 3450i was recommended to me by a few TS members. I've searched for these and they seem to be discontinued and a bit hard to find?
Are there any newer batteries out that would have a similar feature set?
I'm primarily interested in the dedicated 5V usb for powering the PMD 661 or Zoom H6, and the switchable voltage output for the Mix Pre-D, so that they can be run off the same battery.
DigiGal said the Tekkeon 3450i is especially suited for this because the selectable voltage can be set by a dip switch ("set it and forget it", so to speak), unlike the other versions where you have to choose the voltage each time you power up the unit.

The Tekkeon 3450 is still available here in the EU:

There are a few other external usb batteries with switchable voltage on amazon.com:

It's a bit of an overkill when you look at the watt hours but I went with this.

http://www.bixmart.com/12V-5V-High-Capacity-98Wh-Rechargeable-Battery-Pack--MP100-12V_p_308.html (http://www.bixmart.com/12V-5V-High-Capacity-98Wh-Rechargeable-Battery-Pack--MP100-12V_p_308.html)

I had DigiGal make me a cable and I'm set to go Festival if AC is not available.

Naztech PB15000.

As good or perhaps even slightly better battery than the Tekkeon.  And yes, once you set the voltage it's fixed until you change it again.

Tonedeaf was the first to discover the Naztech and I swear by them.  I tried running a 788T on a Tekkeon 3450 double and it did not like it at all--even running at 16V.  So far so good with the Naztech.

Has Tekkeon stopped production?  I get the impression that everything is NOS.

What exactly don't you like about it? I've got a 3450i double and it's been good for powering everything except an AD2k+ which draws too much current on startup.

hi and lo, I was waiting for Boltman to respond.  As a courtesy, I'll jump in.

I was recording with him when his Tekkeon 3450 (and that accessory power pack) prematurely stopped powering his 788.  He mentioned that this had happened before and either the Tekkeon was getting old or as you mentioned there was too much of a current draw for the Tekkeon to be used with the 788 in the configuration he was using it (eight channels were being recorded to).

For what it's worth, I recall reading here someone saying that they had a Tekkeon fail on them (IIRC it was an overheating event) while powering their 788.  This has been a couple of years ago that I read this.

I have no idea if this is the issue here, but as rechargeables age, their internal resistance increases.  With high current draws such as you might have on a 788, maybe something to consider.

Sorry H & L,
Tonedeaf is right, I think it's due to age mostly (3-4 years).  Curiously, the meter suggested there was plenty of charge left, but I think just more of a current draw than it could handle.

Cool, that's good to know. It's definitely possible to wear them out.

I have two Tekkeon MP3300's (both purchased from the community here, so I don't know how old they actually are) But I have had one abruptly fail while powering my Marantz PMD661, on a couple of occasions. Even though they had been charged and the light meter showed a full charge... This happened during live performances so I just powered it back up as soon as I noticed and both times, and luckily didn't lose power again. At first I thought I might have an issue with the Marantz, but after reading this I wonder if the Tekkeons are just getting old? Is the PMD661 prone to sudden current draws that might cause it to shut down like that? (I had the Tekkeon set to 5V)

Those MP3300s are ancient. Of the three I got, only one worked even close normally. The second was totally busted and wouldn't take a charge. The third is, I swear, possessed. Takes a charge and works just fine, but randomly turns on/off and drains itself very quickly.

I believe the original manufacturing date of these was 2007, so they are 8 years old and were sitting in storage for many years.

I have a Tekkeon 3400 that will last a while but the meter is completely unreliable (meaning it will shutoff (i.e. drained) when still showing over half full)

Lithium packs are great but the Tekkeon's are getting pretty up there in age

I remember reading one user powering a 788t with a 3450 Tekkeon (with the addon pack) and the electronics on the inside of the battery goto so hot the plastic melted all around them

Does anyone run V-Mount batteries around here?

Anybody seen or used these?

Looks to be the same as the Tekkeon's...

I need something to power a 6v Lunatec V3.

Robbie- I've been running my V3 on these. They're pretty inexpensive and small.

the cable is very easy to make or one of the cable guys here can make you one.

Picked up the Naztech 15000 and Ted made me a cable to go from it to hirose for the SD722.

Does anyone know what the ideal voltage setting is on that Naztech for the SD722? I'm guessing 12 but I don't really know since the range is 10-18.

(The SD literature says "The 722 can be powered externally from 10–18 VDC (2 amp minimum). External DC fully powers the unit and charges an attached Li-ion battery simultaneously using the 722’s onboard Li-ion charger. The charger circuit operates whenever the unit is powered on and optionally when the unit is off, depending on the external power wiring".

In general (in other words IDK about the 722 in particular), all the volts a device draws but doesn't use get turned into heat. I have a MixPre which specifies 5-18V, and it works fine at 5V, but the power lights don't come on. Sounds fine, but it's unnerving. Quick interwebs search, and the 722 device will actually function below 10, but funny things start happening. That's a long-winded way to say 12 sounds good.
