Sonosax HD recorder

Subject: Re: SD & 744T at AES
              From: philippebdc@hotmail.com (Philippe bdc)
               Date: Yesterday  15:20
Newsgroups: rec.arts.movies.production.sound

I just had the opportunity to see and touch a 744T yesterday here in
Paris, France at our SATIS which is the big national show for TV
Cinema and radio gear.
Unfortunately i had not the possibility to really use it but touching
it was possible (the cantar here is shown in a display cabinet)
I also had the opportunity to see the prototype of the new Sonosax 8
tracks recorder which is not bigger than an Ipod! There will be a
future version embedded in a portable mixer.
We waited for a long time for this kind of recorders and finally they
are on the market
The next step should be a recorder with the same number of mike inputs
as tracks and the same size and features of an eng mixer!

Philippe, Paris

-=-=-=-=-

I sent Philippe a message because I'm not sure if this has any mic inputs (doesn't sound like it from his description), and is suppose to be used as a backup device, or what.

If this is true, I hope they'll release 2 and 4-channel flavors.

Simply for price, I'd agree.  But hell if it's just a box with digital inputs my dreams are answered. ;D

I tried contacting the individual, but heard nothing back. Either he is ignoring me, or has too much email from people asking about it. But no word from Sonosax about it.

Since this was a prototype, it might be a while before a production unit hits the street.

I'll try e-mailing my contact at Sonosax. The guy I was working with to get my SX-M2/LS2 was pretty helpful and e-mailed me back the next day most of the time.

Sonosax MINIR82            ( Miniature Recorder )

Configurable from 2 to 8 tracks, this miniature recorder ( it fits in the pocket of a vest ) responds to the différent situations commonly found in mobile recording :

-  Stereo, with 2 microphones : in this situation, the sound engineer needs to have an equipment as small as possible.

- Stereo 2 micros + 2 lignes : e.g. an ambiance sound with a stereo mic and a dialogue with 2 wireless receivers connected to the 2 Line Input at fixed level.

-  Recording up to 8 tracks: in this situation, the sound engineer usually needs a mixing console digitally connected to a recorder. As the functionalities commonly offered by the mixer are already covering the needs of this situation, the Recorder can be used for his primary function, that is "Recording".

Despite its reduced size -  only120 x 80 x 28 mm (4.75” x 3.15” x 1.1”) for a weight of approx. 450 gr (1/2 pound) with 4x AA batteries –  the MINIR82 achieves all these differents situations. The  MINIR82 includes two top quality microphone amplifiers with limiters and LF Cut,  2 Line inputs at fixed level and  8 AES/EBU Digital Inputs.

With Recording capabilities from 44,1kHz up to 192 kHz at 24bits, the storage is achieved on two separate medias: one 20 or 40GB hard disk and one CompactFlash card . The intuitive menu allows users to freely configurate tracks and media assignement. Of course, Time Code functionalities are availabe, all formats, including HDTV.

I bet this thing is going to be expensive! No mention of doing 16bit.

I'm guessing that digital input is on some kind of custom breakout cable. I'm thinking there's no way you can fit 8 AES circuits onto a box this size and still have room for an analog section.

Stealther's Dream? Maybe :)

Anytime you have timecode options and AES digital, you're talking bucks. But then we're also talking about Sonosax, which is a pro company and you don't expect junk from them.

Thanks for finding out the scoop!

Well hopefully you can "configurate" one that is simpler and cheaper :). i.e 2 channel with no time code.

Well I guess we can scratch this one off the list. From Sonosax....

At this stage we do not yet have a clear idea of its pricing but should be below CHF 10'000 ( so below US 8'000 )
availability will be early 2005

hey, all they said is "below $8000."

so far, this thing still falls within my requirements.  The 24-bit recorder that I will purchase in the (hopefully near) future will most definitely be "below $8000"

There's 3 new products - MINIR82( Miniature Recorder ), SX42R , and SX-ST8DR. Which one were they referring to?

Edit: Looking at the pricelist, it must be for the recorder alone. The SX42 starts at $4700 and the ST8D starts at $16,352.

I spoke with Sonosax today regarding this recorder, here is the scoop:

MINIR82            ( Miniature Recorder )

Configurable from 2 to 8 tracks, this miniature recorder ( it fits in the pocket of a vest ) responds to the différent situations commonly found in mobile recording :

-  Stereo, with 2 microphones : in this situation, the sound engineer needs to have an equipment as small as possible.

They are saying less than $8K and shipping early 2005.  I get the feeling that we will see a couple different versions of this, and hopefully the 2 track will be competitive with some of the other units out there......

ST8D starts at $16,352.

This is Sonosax's answer to the Cantar and Deva V. All of these units are priced around the same price point.

OK, so this thing is around iPod size, but yet it takes four AA batteries? How small are the components in this thing? Are there any small (stealable) A>D units that do 192 kHz at 24bits if the MINI's isn't that great?

imagine a 20-40 g HD, able to do stealth 24/192 DVD-Audio grade, implications are you won't need the outboard stuff like A/d or mic pre,ad runs on AA's rather than propiatary bats. While a pricetag of 4000-8000 bucks is nuts-the key here is that is exists. Only a few years back a 2x CD burner for the 'puter was aroun 300-400 bucks...now a more reliable 48x runs $50-$60. Some other maker will look at the CONCEPT, a hi-grade fully integrated recorder and find a way to put most of the features in a product that might at first run $1000,but a tear later go for a bit under $500. Soon we will need to learn how to burn DVD Adio at 24/192

In light of the MT (which I bought one of and still haven't had in my hands yet) issues I've read about, I'm just hoping I can record a show with it.

This is all I could get out of them on 10/14:

Dear Mr.,

thank you for your message and for your interest in our products and developments.
The development of the 2 channel  MINIR2 will follow this of the MINIR82 ( 8 channels ).
However, as the MINIR82 is delayed, we can not actually give you any further information about the MINIR2.
We have added your e-mail address in our mailing list and you will be informed as soon as possible.

Kind regards

Pierre Blanc

I SAW IN A PREVIOUS DISCUSSION SOMEONE QUOTE $3400 FOR THE 2 CHANNEL. SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT FOR SAX TO CHARGE ABOUT $1K MORE THAN SOUND DEVICES. WE'LL SEE HOW MANY PROBLEMS THIS ONE HAS W/THE 8 CHANNEL WELL BEFORE THE 2 CHANNEL MAKES IT TO MARKET - HOPEFULLY ALL THE BUGS WILL BE WORKED OUT BY THEN.
