For when you WANT the rejection I'll agree, but for the best a great sounding room and wanting to capture that off-axis sound I'll stick with the DPA's.
Maybe a couple of small scratches, but thats because these mics are chick magnets.
Girls always up on Andy tryin to grab these mics, the scratches are from their wedding rings.

You guys are talking two different animals:  off-axis sound v. off-axis rejection.

A different animal than Bean was talking about.

Here's the answer, only problem is I can't read it.

this graph shows the on-axis and off-axis response of the 402x's, and is quite matter-of-fact to read.

Can't find a similar one for the Schoeps, I'm curious.

hmmm, intriguing post for sure, i think the off-axis rejection is great on the DPA line and the schoeps line on the mk4/5 is great alkso, however, the Schoeps mk41 off-axis rejection is horrible IMO, seems to pick up ALOT of sounds from that rear lobe compared to the 483/210/150 lines, but YMMV

The rear lobe is a characteristic of the hyper cardioid capsule and has absolutely nothing to do with off axis rejection.  Do you think the fact that you hear sounds from the rear might have something to do with the fact that some run the 41's in FOB situations at head height and not back in the section on a tall stand?

My thoughts/impressions were that the mk41 are great in that reguard, hell, that's a large reason I bought them.  Perhaps what you've heard was from other factors, are there any A - B comps out there?

Gotta say IME I've not encountered problems picking up noises from the rear with the MK41s.  I think, as suggested above, the "problems" Bean's experienced are related to pattern selection, location, and config, not any particular brand of hyper.

ok..sorry to confuse the issue w/my responce on off axis "sound" vs rejection.
I think the mk4 rejects plenty.  but it has a sound to it that i like.
