Wavelab dithering
« on: January 26, 2004, 09:39:03 PM »
I have done some research and checked every where i could and can't figure out why......after i dither my 24 bit file, i still have a 24 bit file. I selected uv22hr from the dither box, and 16 from the pop up box. Am i missing something? It seems to run through it's process and then nothing but the same 24 bit file.

After you've selected your dither type (UV22HR), the 2nd dither box pops up.  You select your parameters (normal, 16).  Sounds like you've gotten that far.

Then you click render on the original box (where you selected the dither type).

That brings up another box where you can name the new file.  There's a pulldown box just below the file name.  Select Wav 16 bit
Then OK.

Maybe you were missing the part where you 'render' or perhaps where the rendered file is set to 16 bit?

yes. i name the original. and i tried both the options for either a new file or in place. neither worked.

It won't allow me to change that pull down box. it is set to 16 bit wav by defalt (i assume because that was the output i chose in the previous step)

Nope. i did that too.

Yeah, same here - CEP is a no-brainer for me.  I tried Samplitude once...ugh, never again.  One of these days I'll give Wavlab and Soundforge a try just for kicks.

found out yesterday that CEP will NOT pull a signal from the Audiophile 2496 s/pdif.
it will only pull a signal from the monitor mixer/wav out, not the actual s/pdif.
prolly not a big deal overall but I found this rather weird

Unfortunately(?) WaveLab has the UV22 licensed from Apogee.  Probably one of the best dither/down algorythyms on a 'puter.  That's probably one of the ONLY things I use WaveLab for.  Wish they (Apogee) would just release it as a DirectX Plugin, so it could be used in ANY APP that supports DX Plugins...

IMO, it is ... though word is MegaBitMax is soon to be on a PC. That's the gold standard these days.

BTW, wavelab has UV22HR.

I use CuBase at work, so WaveLab makes more sense to me.
I used CEP before that and thought it was very easy to work with.

Problem Solved.

It WAS a renaming issue. After i selected the render button, I figured "create new file" was just as good as naming the new file. Wrong. You must select "Create Specific File" in the Rendering Preferences Box. Thanks for the help Rob and D. +t's

Just want to make sure that I have things correct.

In the "Rendering Preferance" Dialog box tab "File", I have the following selected:
  "Range" section, "Whole file": Selected
"Result" section, "Create new file" and "Copy markers": Seclected
  "Create specific file": Selected

When I select the the drop down below the "Rename as source" button, it opens the "Audio File Format" dialog box.  Are these setting correct:

Type: Wave (Microsoft)
File extension: wav (this is gray'ed out)
Audio format: PCM (uncompressed)
Channels: No Changes
Sample Rate: No Changes
Bit resolution: 16 bit
Attributes: Untitled

I know this is a really really old post, but I'd like to disagree.  I pull the s/pdif signal off my audiophile 2496 with CEP just fine.

I was referring to the UV22HR native to WL.

Eventually I'll have to try Waves as well. I understand it is a great sounding algo.

I'm trying to put together a simple guide for tapers using WaveLab to do 24bit/xx kHz to 16 bit/44.1 kHz conversions. What I have here is just the step-by-step process for using this software.

I've included  a .txt file I'm working on. I'd really appreciate any feedback I can get on this. If it is accurate, understandable, the most efficient way to work, did I leave anything out, etc... After I get some input I'll post it for general consumption.

Thanks in advance...

Please do!
Since I couldn't attach a .doc file, I noticed my formating got messed up a bit.
I've used a condensed, handwritten version of this for a while now.
Unfortunately, it's only for v. 5.0a.

Edit: I added a formated .doc file in a zip file.

dithering should be the final step.  do your resampling in 24bit.

just in case someone wanted to know how to use different algorithms for dither in the "batch" menu.

1. Open up the batch dialog (tools>batch processing), add the files you want to process with the folder button
2.) click on the button that looks like envelopes stacked up
3) you will see all the plugins you have installed. UV22 and UV22HR should be in VST(I like waves IDR)
4.) drag and drop the plugin to the left side of the screen, click ok, then run

I only wish they had incorporated POW-R 3 dither...that is my favorite by far.

been trying to figure this dither thing out, but i haven't had any luck. i have followed these directions exactly. and so far, my 32 bit file has not been able to dither to 16 bit. do i have to dither to 24 bit first?

a little background:
- i made a matrix of a studio session i recorded for my friends
-took two 16 bit files and used the audio montage option in wavelab 5.0
-i rendered after matching the files up and the result was a 32 bit file. (i guess b/c i made a matrix of two 16 bit files  :-\ )
-now i want to dither back to 16 bit
-i chose dither (UV22 HR @ normal and 16 bit)
-hit the render button
-in the pop up menu i chose for range (whole file) result (create new file) checked (create specific file) and renamed the file from dearprudence to dearprudence16bit
-clicked okay and still have a 32 bit file

what am i doing wrong?

Sounds like Wavelab is configured to output a 32bfp file when creating a mix from montage.  It isn't that 16-bit + 16-bit = 32bfp, but rather that WL uses 32bpf precision when generating the mix.  You could mix 24-bit + 16-bit, or 8-bit + 16-bit and you'd still have a 32bfp file.

-clicked okay and still have a 32 bit file

I've done something similar in Audition - resampled/dithered/saved to a new file, couldn't figure out why my file was still 32bfp.  Well, I didn't open the NEW file I created, but rather checked the original 32bpf file.  Did you check the bit-depth of the NEW file?  (No offense intended with such a simple thing to check, I figure we all do screwy things sometimes.)

yeah definitely checked the file i created and it was still @ 32 bit. thanks for the explaination brian +T. i checked and wavelab was configured to output a 32 bit file when creating a montage. i guess i could redo the mix w/ it configured to 16 bit, but i want to figure out how to dither this file for future knowledge.

Worked just fine for me now with WL 5.

  • Open 24-bit or 32bfp file
  • Turn on Master Section (Options | Use Mastering Section)
  • In the Dithering sub-frame, select UV22HR from the dropdown
  • In the UV22HR window, select Normal and 16-bit
  • In the Master Section, click the Render button
  • In the File tab, Range frame, select Whole File radio button
  • In the File tab, Result frame, select Create New File radio button
  • In the File tab, Create Specific File frame, tick the Create Specific File checkbox
  • In the File tab, Create Specific File frame, select an existing path and assign a non-existing filename
  • In the File Tab, select the Audio File Format bar (not titled as such, mine's titled 'Wave (PCM) 16-bit / Attr. Untitled)
  • In the Audio File Format window, set format as follows:  Type = Wave (Microsoft);  Audio Format = PCM (uncompressed);  Channels = no change;  Sample Rate = no change;  Bit Resolution = 16-bit;  Attributes = untitled;  Preset = untitled
  • Click the OK button
  • Watch the "Monitor" window track the process status
  • Playback file the new file with Bit Meter to confirm 16-bit output
From your description below, sounds exactly like what you're doing.  So...  ???

Yeah, I had the idea to make a nice easy to follow guide to using WaveLab to do this stuff.
I have a little txt file in here to download. I was hoping to get feedback on it then make it available as a guide.
I didn't get any input, so I thought maybe there wasn't a need for it.
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.
