Stealth recording - from 1958!
« on: January 18, 2020, 10:56:59 PM »
Slightly off topic I admit.... This is my late father in law playing.  He snuck into a theatre back in '58 while nobody was around, clutching a tape recorder (the sort with reels!), set it up, played this piece on the mighty Wurlitzer, and snuck out again quick before the caretaker woke up.  I restored it from the tape at his request many years ago.

I guess in this forum I should be posting exactly what gear was used and how it was set up (well - "quickly" is the answer to that)  but sadly that's lost in the mists of time.

It's under 3 minutes.  Enjoy!

I'm now informed that the recording was made on a Philips 4 track machine fed from a Philiips dynamic mic.  So now we know.  :)

OMG your pop-in law ROCKS! Was he ever a professional player? Did he play organ at home?

Thanks - yes to both questions, although he made a living in all sorts of different ways, not just as a musician.  He not only played well but was a lovely man, full of good humour and warmth.  As it happens, he died  9 years ago this very day.

This is great!  Very talented player, and a remarkably good recording given the era and situation.

I once happened upon a huge, deserted music hall attic in which multiple concert marimba of various sizes and other orchestral instruments were stored.  Played my heart out on the most gigantic one for about 5 minutes.  It was so deep and resonant it shook my entire body and seemingly the entire room.  I pulled myself away and split before anyone wandered up to see what was going on.  I'm certainly no marimba player though, and I didn't record it, but I sure wish I did!

... which reminds me of the period of my recording career when I was working with a wealthy pianist who was a bit prone to not actually turning up for recording sessions.  So I'd be in fine church acoustic with a grade one full size Steinway from the London hire fleet, fully prepared by their best technicians - and alone.  So I would sit down for as long as I liked, and play... especially as nobody was there to hear!
