$500 > $1000 mic pairs.....
« on: April 23, 2005, 05:21:44 PM »
Hey all...

i'm re-building my rig on the mid-price point.  I just can't justify thousands when I only get out so infrequently.
Knowing this, i've narrowed my thoughts down to a few mics, and would like to hear from owners of any of them.

AKG 390 set (one set of caps, no actives)  approx, what, $700ish?
AKG 451 pair around $700
neumann KM184 pair $700-1000
Peluso kit with two pairs of caps, around $750

Of course, my heart lies w/the detail and sound of the big 3, namely cmc6/mkxx kit - SMK100 kit and 480's.  but I dont have the jingle.

I'm looking for as much detail and natural sounding performance as I can get...and keep it around $800.  I will not consider anything that is not full range 20hz-20khz.  I know things come up from time to time, like the 483's that went just recently.  and i'm on a time frame of between now and ....summer maybe.
Will be running direct into the R4, which is pretty clean sounding w/little coloration.

Anyone have something to sell?

im sure the 390 seriesisnt that expensive, maybe half that much w/ cards or hypers, either or

451's would prollysound well, its basically the ck6x caps permanently mounted in card right ???

I think the older 451s had interchangable caps. A used pair of 391s usually goes for $350-400. I've seen a couple pairs of used 480s go for $800-850 with either 61 or 63 caps. If you could spend that much on 480s, I'd go with them. Since you obviously like checking out new gear Nick, why not pick up a pair of peluso cards?

Edit: You could also pick up a pair of 461s for $500-550 and then have JW mod them for another $350 at a later date. I was very pleased with the stock 460 sound.

really ?  I thought the 391s were close to 7 bills.
Those would by my last choice.  they sound ok, but a little funny to me.

the 451 is based off of the ck1 capsule, which was originaly in the 460's card cap?
the Peluso's have me intrigued, but nobody seems to have any input on how they sound.  I wonder if there is any credit to their 19k > 25kHz freq responce.  would be nice for hi-rez recording.
I'm leaning towrds these, but wonder if i'm getting into something along the lines of the MC-012, which I dont wnat to be in.

not too many folks run the 451's either, thats why i thought theyd be interesting, or the puelso's, lets get a review on a diff flavor than the usual suspects, unless you wanna buy something your keeping for awhile, in that case, go w/ the 481/3's ;D

johnw is right, youcan prolly hokld off and get 481/3 for 8-900 a pair :)

I have the 300 series, the prices bean stated for used are more or less correct, tending to be a bit higher if hypers or actives.  New they are very expensive.  I really like mine, plus the abundance of used mics means capsules are cheaper to come by, so i'll be sticking with that I think.  Also the Audix 1290's are fun toys, I believe sonic sense has a pair in their demo section for a good deal.  They also have interchangable caps.  Also the 460's can occasionally be had for that price range.

I've owned the 1290s all ready (remember who your talkig to...mic slut extraordinare)
nice sounding...but only 30hz for a bottom end, and I could fell the lack of weight on my stereo.

the 451s ...id run in a heartbeat.
a used pair of km184s wouldnt suck either.

I'll probably end up buying the Pelusos so that we can get a new flavor going on in the section.
I just need to use my jedi mind tricks to get a pair for review.. they are not very "responsive".  Ive since moved on to bugging soundpure.com, the biggest retailer and guy who stands to gain a lot from a favorable review.  Lets hope he knows how to play ball.

there are some 451 pairs on ebay right now, but ebay really tends to overinflate the prices on those i think.  As for the 393's if you would like to borrow them this summer you are more than welcome to if you've never tried them.  The audix's cut it a bit short for me I think, but when I borrowed them and used them with my FP-24 it kinda rounded out the bottom end problem and I don't think it was as much of a problem, however I used them to tape mostly acoustic stuff.

I say go for the neumanns and pick up the actives that are (i think) still for sale.  Though that might throw it over 1k.

Personally I hope you get the Pelusos on loan from a dealer, Id like to hear your review of them to see if they contend with all the others. Plus I agree a new flavor never hurts.
But if you cant get them on loan I think the 184's would suit you well, I think they are nice mics for the price and see used ones for sale on a regular bases, unlike the 480s that only pop up every once in a while.

I'd have to agree w/you here.  i've got so many great 184 recordings.  no fear running those.
i'm just scared of a fixed cap mic.
