Title: using a 75ohm XLR audio cable for AES digital audio?

i have a analogue 75ohm XLR cable. can i use it as an AES cable for digital signal? ive seen people do it before so i was wondering if anyone had problems doing it.

I have used 75 ohm cable (coax cable w/ shielding) when going from AES (3 conductor) to RCA/BNC (2 conductor) by tieing pin 1&3 together on the xlr side.  Not sure what the results would be if you tied pins 1&3 on both sides.

I recently ran across another DIY solution for this and made up one of these cables myself for grins using parts on hand.  Don't have an AES source myself but I borrowed a 48kHz source to test it out and confirmed that it does work feeding a PMD661...   

So a simple AES to SPDIF cable can be made using a quality 75 ohm coax video cable (i.e. Belden 1505A or equivalent), and to turn the 110 ohm AES source into a 75 ohm impedance install 237 ohms of resistance across pins 2 and 3 within the cables AES's XLR-F connector with the center conductor of coax to pin 2 and shield to pin 1.  Then terminate the other end of the coax with either a true 75 ohm BNC or true 75 ohm RCA connector to meet your needs. 

The 237 ohm resistance in parallel with the 110 ohm AES source converts it to 75 ohm internally in the XLR-F connector and is then 75 ohm impedance matched all the way to the SPDIF termination.

Using one of these baluns would drop the AES voltage to 1V p-p (http://www.gpsys.com/SP_User_Guides/DATS-UG.pdf)

By the way has anyone connected a MixPre-D to a Marantz Professional PMD661 in this manner, wondering if they'll work together via digital at 98kHz sample rate?  It looks promising after the 48kHz AES source worked without error.

I used Neutrik XCC XLR-F connector for this flexible LV-61S video cable, it works clean with AES > S/PDIF compatibility for MixPre-D to PMD661 at 24/96. 

This AES to SPDIF cable uses a quality 75 ohm coax video cable, converts the 110 ohm AES source into a 75 ohm load impedance with 237 ohms of resistance across pins 2 and 3 within the cables AES's XLR-F connector with the center conductor of coax to pin 2 and shield to pin 1. Terminated the other end of the coax with a 75 ohm RCA connector to match PMD661's S/PDIF input.
