So I've got the 184's on the way, got the mod sbm1 on the way, and now I'm stuck.
I'm looking for the balance between warmth and accuracy here, and ideally I'd like to keep it a little on the lighter side (no sla for me, thank you) and on the smaller side.
Here are my thoughts right now for my options:
oade 148- buy goose's. It would stretch me a little thin for the near future, but I'd be ok and I know the 148/sbm combo is just sick as hell.
psp-2/3- never been a fan of these, but only really used them with the 170s
sonosax sx-m2- again only used it with the 170's, and i liked it then. design is a touch clunky, but whatever
mp-2- it's ok, nothing to write home about in my book
v2/3 is a bit big for me
minime is just too big and too prone to fire hazards
beyond that im stuck
thoughts, opinions?

Either the Sax or the Brick. I'd go brick. Dare to be different I say.

get the brick and be done w/ it. :)

184 = warm/colour
sbm1 = warm/colour
depending on your playback and your tastes.. but I say go for a v2(big for you?) or some transformers(I'd try this first.. see how you like it.. you just might)..
edit.. or ditch the sbm and go for a warm mod ua5 used..
-
V2.
I know you said its too big, but I think that would be the most economical way to balance out the warmth of the mod SBM-1, IMO.

fyi the playback system is:
b&w 800 series all around for the main 5
velodyne dd-10 sub
mcintosh pre/processor/amp (i just use the internal dac in the mcintosh mainly as it is awesome)
denon 2900 universal

no ua-5. dont like it.

Do you have any access to borrow things to try out? IMO, that mod sbm-1 is quite warm...
-
My votes for 1) the brick, 2) V2.

easier for me is to just download comps. the 140's are remarkably close to the 184's (it's very difficult to tell a difference). i can go that way, just curious to see some other input.

The brick is a legend, and they don't come up for sale very often. I'd grab that thing and never look back.
You'll probably get new mics before ditching the brick, IMO.
-
Jonny, you had a brick, right? Did you ever run it into a mod-sbm-1?
-
no question, brick or ps-2, that's right straight power supply to mod sbm-1. If you like the neumann sound just try it, I think levels will be hot enough

i had a brick that i was running with my dpas.
im buying the brick from goose. if i dont like it i'll sell it- im not going to lose money on it.

Woo-hoo! Congrats on the purchase. Welcome back to the team. ;D
-
thanks. it is paid for and done.
184 > 148 > mod sbm-1 > d8/microtracker (need to buy a microtracker still, but may hold out for a bit)
