Title: Sony M10 and Edirol R05 competitor?
Post by: TheMetalist on July 27, 2016, 03:08:25 PM
Both Sony M10 and Roland R05 are great but far from new on the electronics market which (usually) evolve very quickly.

Some new recorder must be a worthy competitor to those two? Any suggestions?

Personally I would love a tiny device like the two above but without internal mics to get it even smaller and more convenient for stealth recordings.

Not new, but if it's stealth you're after what about the iPhone?

I recently recorded a concert with Church Audio CAFS -> Ugly Battery Box -> Tascam ixj2 -> iPhone

I was rather impressed.

how long does it last, the battery life using that? It works only on iphone 4/s?

It works on the new iPhones with the adapter, which I have used. I keep some mics, the ixJ2 and an adapter in the glovebox of my car as my standby.

On this occasion I used an iPhone 4s (64gb) to keep the connections to a minimum in stealth mode. I have the RĂ˜DE Rec App which enables 44.1/24 recordings.

From memory after about 2 and a half hours the battery was still more than 70%. I was using a battery box, and the PIP was switched off on the ixJ2. I doubt the PIP on the Tascam unit would be sufficient in loud situations, and it would probably drain the battery on the phone a lot quicker.

Now interested to know what PIP voltage it does supply, so will check later.

Edit: Just checked the PIP voltage and it was 3.56v which is actually higher than I expected. I might try ditching the battery box next time. Also, just charged iPhone 5 up to 100% battery and ran a recording for 90 mins, PIP on, Airplane mode on, and the battery ran down to 86%. So more than adequate for stealth.
