Yet more BT help, please...
« on: May 29, 2007, 01:15:54 PM »
I realise that search is my friend, but believe me I can't make head nor tail of any of the sites I've looked at.

The problem is this - I want to open the ports that I require in order to maximise my upload and download. The problem is that I have no damn idea how. I thought I got it right ages ago, but now I realise that it wasn't making any difference.

Is there anyone out there with a BT Voyager 205 ADSL router who might be able to help?

I'm confused, firstly, because I apparently need a static IP - but that there are different types of static ip, and whenever I follow instructions as to how to set one I lose my internet connection. Apparently there isn't even any point in forwarding anything without such a static ip...

I'm thinking of getting someone qualified to do it, but how do I persuade them that I'm wanting to use bittorrent perfectly legally?

Have you been to http://portforward.com?

Here's the link to your router:

That's the site I've been looking at - having trouble getting to grips with 'setting a static ip' though. Seems OK until I try to establish what the 'DNS/name server' is - no idea how to find that out.

I can usually understand these things if they are explained step by step, but this is just confusing my poor brain.
