When you select WAV as the recording format, it will lock into whatever the signal is, right?

As long as its 16-bit and 44.1/48kHz. Other bit-depths and sample rates may lock on but the NJB3 will truncate > 16-bit bit-depths and will likely drop/misplace samples with > 48kHz sample rates.

You don't have to actually set the sampling rate is anywhere, right?

Assuming you're talking about feeding the NJB3 a digital signal: simply select WAV and you're done - it'll pick up the sample rate from the incoming signal.  (Obviously, you have to set the sample rate on your external ADC.)

Has anyone ever had trouble getting the JB3 to lock onto a signal? If so, what did you do (in what order)?

Haven't had trouble, so no real world experience.  First I'd first check all mechanical connections and power-cycle the ADC and NJB3.

only small problem ive had is that it doesnt like to start right up sometimes

and in that case, i keep a couple paper clips in my bag anyway, just pop a paperclip in the reset on the bottom, and BOOM, reboots right up

a recording studio engineer buddy of mine told me there is a general school of thought that says 'you should record/master in the same sample rate as your final product'.  if you are only going to make cd's from your recordings there is no reason to record in 48k other than having an afinity to dropping samples when you resample :P    this is very evident when trying to do a matrix with a source recorded at 44.1 and another resampled from 48 to 44.1.  for example doing a mix with the livephish sbds. they sync perfect to sources recorded at 44.1, but with a source resampled from 48 to 44.1..  forget-about-it!

oh btw.. i just bought a new 40gig JB3 on ebay for $289.. is that a good deal?
