Title: DPA 4560 - New Binaural Headset
Post by: aaronji on December 02, 2019, 01:19:04 PM
DPA is coming out with a binaural headset based on the 4060. It’s not on their site yet, that I can find, but a number of retailers are advertising it...

Very cool.  Not far off from the Core Sound version in price, still needs a battery box or XLR adapter.

That is sort of what I showed Bruce Myers about 20 yeas ago (my own HRTF headband).
And the DPA4060 HRTF headband is an extension of the HRTF studies I began with the Senn MKE2002 headband, going back 35+ years, used in the same fashion.

I wonder what it is about the current market that motivated DPA to come out with this now.  It's not like binaural recording is new.  Someone in DPA must've identified sufficient demand to make this worth producing.  I wonder where that demand is coming from?

Nice but expensive.

A pair of "LOM mikro Usi Pro" mics, a sport earphones set and a bit of diy can do similar for less money and less noise :-)

Given the flat response of the 406x omnis in all directions would this really sound any different at all than 406x in croakies right in front of the ears? Technically not in the ear canal but still using the head as a baffle.

This also goes against the tried and true ‘throw in some earplugs and go where is loud’ method of stack taping. (Apart from being the high sense versions of the mics. Given the design there’s no guarantee they could just simply swap 4061s in there

Yes, seems like these might not work for folks here, unless they roll out a 4061 version like Core Sound has.    I've always used my 4060's with no problem, but feeding a line input instead of a mic input.  4060 and 4061 distortion points are the same, so it's only output level that's an issue.

The 4560 would be affected by the pinna.  Whether this is an audible difference to a particular listener is of course dependent on that listener.

Sorry... I started a thread on this before seeing this one.

So, which would you choose and why? shoulder-mounted 4060's, or this headset?

I'm interested in playback over speakers and headphones. I realize the binaural effect is only on headphones, but do some stereo cues still survive when binaural recordings are played over speakers?

BGE,...
That is the beauty of HRTF vs. Binaural (pure form).
HRTF is very speaker friendly, yet retains the binaural goodness. And, the headband garners you another 6" of elevation over shoulders.

probably trying to tap into the ASMR market, there are a lot of ppl doing it on youtube. I doubt enough to warrant it but *shrug*
