So i have a ton of CDs, want to transfer them to my Mac external HD..is there a program out there other than Itunes to do this that you guys have used? thanks
-
I use EAC (Exact Audio Copy) on PC. I have no idea if it's available on Mac. If it is, though, it's likely worth considering.

AFAIK there is no mac equivalent to EAC.
EAC would probably run in WINE though

I'm not a Mac person, but my understanding is that xACT is the preferred CD ripping tool. Essentially the Mac equivalent of EAC.
-
while xact is the best native mac software, it lacks the redundant read-and-compare feature of eac , last time i checked (many moons ago)
-
I use Max to rip from CD to Mac:
https://sbooth.org/Max/
Old, but works fine.
-
I did a shootout between iTunes vs xACT recently (iTunes 12.9.5.5 vs xACT 2.49 or 2.50) and the resultant MD5 result was identical for all files on the silver disc under test.
(I am presently using an external USB 2.0 Samsung slimline BluRay burner)
iTunes won't convert to FLAC for you, but you might like the tagging interface better, since it auto tags things that it can find in the CD database

Cool, thanks everyone for the info....Ya i guess just use Itunes or maybe that Max app looks interesting,. i actually have xACT. hadn't used it in so long i forgot it does that as well. so ill try those thx.

XLD is the EAC equivalent for OSX:

I second XLD. If you want good metadata control, use it in tandem with MusicBrainz Picard.

Awesome thanks, just tried this works great.

Trying XLD here as well, so far all good, thanks!

This is what I used to rip my whole collection. Awesome stuff.

HAHA evidently I installed that last October. Thanks for the "reminder"

When I suggested xACT I actually meant XLD. ;)
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

While trying to figure out whether I wanted to "include pre-gap except for HTOA", I noticed that XLD lacks any help feature.
found this chart which seems to have an overview of features for many different ripping software packages.

One thing I prefer in Max over XLD, at least with my testing so far: It's easier to tell Max to organize the resulting files by artist and album, which is a feature I quite like.

iTunes does that, too bad apple is removing it in the future.

I also use EAC. any chance you know how to mass tag the uncompressed files? i have a bunch of CDRs of audience recordings that I want to transfer, but want to re-tag the actual file name (01 Track01, 02 Track02) to something else.
-
are they commercially-released CDs? in many cases it is easier to just download someone elses ripped-with-log-and-tagged FLACs
as far as ROIO, most if not all of that is already out there as well, some lacking the (in some cases problematic) CD gen

no they are audience recordings. definitely havent been finding them in the database.

nice!

I've used Media Monkey for CD ripping, CD burning, track naming, and flac conversion for years. Its cheap and works on a Mac or PC. The auto-organize function is worth the price of the program twice over.

I like xACT and have used it for years with my iMac.

XLD seems to not be supported after a OS update a little while back.
Looks like my options are to check out Max (thank you nulldogmas) or EAC (on PC > external hd > Mac) :hmmm:
Update: Max isn't supported either. Looks like I'll have to use EAC and check on XLD updates in the future.

I am having no issues running XLD on Catalina 10.15.7

haha iTunes didn't go anywhere, they just renamed it Music in Big Sur (and Catalina? Dunno, I skipped from Mojave)
