Tascam DR-07 . . . drawbacks?
« on: November 12, 2010, 07:21:50 PM »
Ok.
I think I will finally be in a position to get some new recording gear.
I'm really leaning towards the Tascam DR-O7.
But before I decide to pull the trigger on one, was looking for input from those who have used one.
What are the downsides to this recorder?
I'd rather know about any possible issues before I make my decision.
Always looking for Iron Maiden and Papa Roach audio that I don't have.

it is NOT likely going to be an issue for us but when I tried this recorder out in a store, the handling noise (listening via headphones) was very loud. If you were going to hold it often, just be aware of that and don't move it around a lot.
Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth.

ScottT has been using one for a few months now.  If he doesn't chime in here you should send him a PM.  I'm interested in one, too.  I've been using it to record class lectures with the internal mics in mp3 and it works fine for that, but I'd love to hear more about how it performs in the field.

Thanks.
Yeah, I am curious about actual field use, and wear and tear issues.
I see the line-in, is on the side. not sure if that could be a problem or not.
And I don't know if the recording levels lock, or are easily bumped, etc.

Stuff like that.

I use mine for sbd patches but beaware that if you are going to hold on to it the input level is a small wheel that can be easily rolled when you put it in your pocket theres no way to really lock it also its very plastic and the button layout is strange to me.

Thanks.
That's the kind of stuff I was looking for.
Not going to be much of a deal, if I am going to have trouble stealthing with it.

I use the R-09hr the input level are physical buttons that have to be pressed , and have never had it stop other then the batteries dying .Record is right in the center and stop is below it  i check my pocket for the red glow every so often to make sure its still rolling. Highly recommended deck

The volume wheel is pretty stiff and whilst I agree it can be moved accidently, it needs a bit of force to move it so I've not found it an issue even with the recorder in my pocket.  I've not really encountered any negatives with it in the field, just its a bit bigger and therefore less steathly than the iRivers I've been using for a long time.  For the money I think its a cracking bit of kit and I've got some decent results at loud shows with the internals as well.

Not as great S/N ratio than more expensive recorders (M10/R-05), but I'm sure you're aware of that.
Do you intend to use the internals or are you shopping for mics + pre to go with it?

Ideally I will get the money together for a nice set of omnis.
But until then, probably the internals, as I think they would probably be better than the crappy Sony ECM-DS70P that I am using now.

Funny listening to people talking about how big the unit is.
I'm running a D8 right now, so all these recorders seem so samll, streamlined, and light compared to lugging that thing around.

After reading the discussion going on in here, I am thinking about waiting until I have a little more cash and getting the Tascam DR-2D.
Having the ability to do 2 pulls of a show would certainly be worth waiting a little longer.
My taping is almost exclusively stealthing loud rock shows. So having another pull at a lower level could help me avoid being brickwalled or overloaded.
