Title: Any new flash card discoveries?
Post by: balou2 on February 07, 2006, 07:07:42 AM
I've followed all the dialog re: flash cards, but it still seems somewhat new...at least in the mainstream.  Concensus seems to be the Kingston Elite and Sandisk cards.  I'm ready to drop the dough, but don't want a crappy card.

- Any new leads on prices?
- Any discoveries on brands that work without fail?
- New info in general?

Sandisk just dropped their prices recently.. this is one of the first sites I found to have the updated pricing.

http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/

I ordred a couple of CF cards this past weekend and they shipped today.  They have had a ton of orders though with the price drop and I think some cards are now backordered for a couple of weeks.  Still, tough to beat these prices.

Does anyone remember what search terms to use for the flash card dump drive I am going to call it.  Essentially, you stick a flash card in the unit, and it dumps the data off of it to a hard drive.  KC has one, and I admired it at NYE in Asheville and want one!

http://hyperdrive.com  (I just ordered the 40GB, which is on backorder, and fyi they have moved the ship date back twice since I ordered just a couple of days ago)

http://www.eastgear.com/shop/index.php?cPath=17_66  (anyone have thoughts on this one?  I may cancel the hyperdrive order since these are shipping)

There are also a lot for sale on ebay, like this one

Funny, the HyperDrive and the CompactDrive look almost identical to me - are they from the same manufacturer?

The only reason I didn't buy something cheaper like this is that it doesn't list the transfer speeds.  I found another on ebay similar and it said it was 2.5mbps, so I stayed away from these... the hyperdrive and pd70x list transfers up to 16mbps.  I guess if you aren't worried about transferring between sets and speed isn't an issue, the ebay drives may be the way to, or at least are the cheaper option.

With the OTG drives, or portable storage devices, how are the files named when transfering from flash card to device?
