Title: Samsung HLT5075S 50in HDTV + XBox 360 for $1000 shipped
Post by: spott on September 26, 2007, 10:57:51 AM
I know nothing about HD televisions, is DLP a dead technology?  This seems like a pretty sweet deal for a 720p, 2500:1 contrast ratio, xbox360 combo?

Bestbuy: Samsung HLT5075S 50in HDTV + XBox 360 for $1000 shipped

I have no experience with DLP TVs, but I know that people who own them tend to love them.  That is a pretty fantastic deal IMO.

my next tv will be a DLP.
I think the picture quality is on par with the plasma maybe a little less but a whole lot cheaper with less overhead.
I prefer DLP over regular LCD .

Most of the DLP's are still too big to wall mount.  They are getting A LOT thinner though...

i have a dlp and love it, you def can not wall mount it though, but i don't want to
basically for me it was size vs cost and i didn't see a big enough difference in lcd/plasma to make it worth the extra in cost

I totally agree, I went and checked it out during lunch at Best Buy.  The xbox deal is not internet only, and the TV is 999.00 at the actual store - so you can walk out for a grand with both items.  For my purposes this is a great deal, the tv is "good enough" for playing xbox and dvd's and I'll get the shiny new HD television in the process.  I think I'm going to pull the trigger on this later tonight.

Also, Amazon's running a deal for the xbox 360 HD DVD player, if you buy it this week you'll get 7 free HD DVD's, not a bad way to start the collection.

+T for posting about this deal. I've convinced my wife to take advantage of it for our bonus room. I did have to promise that I would not use the XBOX for any video games other than Rock Band and Guitar Hero which even she got addicted to playing in the store a few weeks ago. I'll have to sell her on the HD DVD deal as well now.

Does anyone know when this deal expires? I'm swamped today and can't get to Best Buy until tomorrow afternoon. I just don't feel comfortable buying a $1000 DLP online without seeing it in person.

I would call your local store and just have them put one up for you.  Also try adding the attached 10%/12% coupon.   ;D 8)

I went to the store tonight and the deal is good through Saturday.  The fine print says "only on in stock items" but my store didn't have it.  The sales guy I talked to said it's no problem to order it and still get the deal.  I did not ask about the coupon though.

The TV itself looks pretty good but just not quite as crisp as most other 720p LCDs and plasmas.  Also tough to evaluate without knowing how to tweak the TV and with only the in-store tv channel to view.  It's definitely a huge screen though.  And the 46" model and 50" model were both $999 at my store.  ???  Another thing which may affect your decision...these DLP sets are light which is definitely a plus imo.  I wrongly assumed they weighed a couple hundred lbs but I lifted one corner in the store and was surprised how light it was.  The best buy site says 62 lbs which must be about the same as an lcd or plasma.  I'm going to think about it tonight but will probably wait.  I still think it's a good deal though.

And by the way, the "Halo 3 xbox 360" does not include a copy of Halo 3.  Huh?

I went to Best Buy just now. Didn't pick it up yet but I'm going to sleep on it. The salesguy did tell me they'll either give you the XBox value of $350 or 10%-12% off one item coupon, so you can't take advantage of both discounts. If I go back tomorrow, I'll probably be looking at the 61" with LED. And the salesguy also told me the Halo Edition XBox is sold out, not sure if I can get a raincheck on it.

I went back to best buy during lunch (again) today... I've been pretty torn on this decision, on one hand - it's a freaking great deal, for a huge HD television AND it comes with an XBOX360.  I've been reading the TV reviews and they've (for the most part been good); however, there's a number of people complaining about light "bleeding" out of the left rear panels when you watch in a dark room.  When I checked the TV out again today, sure enough there's a small gap on the rear left panel (but nothing some tape couldn't fix), but for some reason I'm hesitating?  I too am going to sleep on this one and make the decision tomorrow.

Just to follow up the post.... I ended up not going with the Best Buy deal, I was concerned about the light emitted from the top left corner and the thing was freaking huge, a little too big for my home office / music room (12.5' x 14.5").  I found a pretty nice deal on a Vizio VX32L ($599 at Sears) and it's 32" 1080i with 2x HDMI connections.  It fits my office a lot better than the 50", and certainly has a great price... I've only had it a few days (got it on Friday), but I was BLOW AWAY at how good the image quality was with the XBOX 360.  For those not familiar with the Vizio's, they have a reputation similar to the Oppo Universal Players, they're damn cheap but have great specs on paper.  It's not going to look like a Pioneer or a top end Samsung, but for someone like me who plays some XBOX every now and again it's perfect.

Vizio advertises on ESPN radio pretty extensively. From what I've read their product has gotten better in the last few years.

I recently saw a good deal on a Westinghouse 1080p 42" for ~$900 as BestBuy after the coupon here. (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8386285&type=product&id=1181831586462)  I do not know for sure what panel they use for this model but I know that they were using Samsung panels in a lot of their LCD computer monitors.  Not a bad price for a 1080p set...
