By request for Big Ray, here's how I power my jb3 for festivals. I get 18 hours of useable record time (phones, backlight etc)
Pics are all the needed parts (minus the creative car adapter) and how it looks put together.
I got everything but the sla at radio shack.

I guess you could make the marks more obvious with a sharpie, but you just have to line up the word tip on each end.
Any connector could be substituted for the adaptaplug, and like I told Ray, you could hard wire the crimp connectors right onto the cig lighter socket if you want. I keep it the way I did it so I can quickly switch to run all my gear off the sla.

Tip : assemble adapta-plugs...and tap the seem with your soldering iron...that will sort of seal them - no reason to disassemble those parts anyway...

I opted for adaptaplug when I did the wiring so that I could just swap on the tips for my ps-2 or ua-5. It saved me from having to snip, strip, splice and crimp cables for everything. When I need to run 2 or more things on the same sla, I just stick in a y cable.
If you know you only want it one way, then your tip, or crazy glue is a great way to go.
I'm just a little out of control, and have made cables for adapta-plug to everything but 4pin xlr. I could run every piece of gear in the section if I were to cart around a 6v SLA too.

I've only ever done it with the laptop's car adapter. I'd be too afraid to feed it the wrong voltage.
7ah only lasted 3 on the lappy.

I've got a powersonic psc-12800a. They make them in several flavors. What you need is a charger that matches the type of sla (6 or 12v) and puts out as much as you can afford. I've got a cheaper one that puts out 300mha and a more expensive one that puts out 800mha. Just divide the total of the battery 7000 in my case by the output of the charger 800 = charge time 8.75 hours That is a lot of time, but it runs the jb3 for 18.

Thanks. I have a home-brew 6v version that someone else put together for me. Since I just aquired a JB3, I was looking for the most economical way to power it.

I could not track it down on their site. Looks like it may be discontinued. My advice is to check your local store, and if you find any buy them all.
Worst case, you can just hack the lighter end off the car adapter and hard wire some other type of connector. That sucks though, because it has a built in fuse, and you couldn't use it in the car after you hack it.

Well, after a big waste of time (the sales kids were watching bum fights on the store's internet kiosk) it seems very likely that the part is discontinued.
However part #22-540 will work instead. It comes with banana plugs, but you can snip them off and wire to the battery however you want. Then plug the car adapter into it.

Anyone tried this with the UA5? Guessing it would work ok. I have a car charger that I bought from Wal Mart that does 9v so I could do threw this method. Thinking of trying out the Wall Mart battery for my JB3. Probably will do a festival in July so wanted to figure this out before then.

The UA-5 will run fine from 9 to 12v You don't need an adapter, just cable it up like the pics of the wally-world 9v that has had a couple threads of it's own.
The only thing you should think about is an in-line fuse, but we should all have them in every one of our power cables already ;)

this is how I run mine aswell.
I run the Ua-5 and two Jb3's off of them.
I have (2) 12v7Ah and (4) 12v5Ah I ran the two 7Ah last year at wakarusa for over 20 hours
I got a killer deal on the 5Ah brand new on ebay (all 4 shipped for $15 ) so I picked them up aswell ::)
And the more I thought about it I could power the Jb3 at the campsite by one of them and playback the show from earlier that day while making dinner/lunch at the campsite.. without draining the internals or using needed juice from the 7Ah 's
heres a rough pic of my batt set up.. I used the adapta plugs and they were both black so I got the idea to take some of the My girlfriends red fingernail polish and make a line so it would be almost ;) stupid proof in the dark at a show. you can kinda see it look at the top of the Jb3 (see the red line) on the adapta plug going into the back of the Jb3, just make sure the red line comes together and were golden..
cables are (2) 10ft mogami and a single 25ft AT cable ,just to show size reference (Thanks to Nick M for the deal on the AT cables )..

heres how they ride.

heres how the UA-5 rides. it gets its own bag which has now been replaced with a Pelican case
notice the Red Neat-o (screw together) connectors. I can swap out adapta plugs or Rc connectors if needed in a few seconds.

here it is packed up like I run it now. (Well sorta) I since plucked the foam so that mics can set on top of each other and piece of foam in between opening up even more room in the case..
and the second (of three Jb3's) rides in this box.
so I now carry a box and a bag full of cables and Batts and everything else..
Not much of "Stealth" setup thats for sure.. But there aint a cable I dont have... ;D
I have been to wayyy too many shows and been short a cable or adapter or I would have had a SBD patch to matrix post. Hence why i have 3 Jb'3 ..
I left room to pluck out some extra If I ever find a deal on some ck61's so the 61's can ride on the mics and the 63's in the squares (where there at now) , the empty hole is for the camera..
its a bit bulky but my stuff is air tight and water proof while storing

I'm owndering what else is available as a car adpater for the JB3. The Creative car adapter is $40some delivered and that is quite a bit.
I was trying to find a generic adapter, maybe at Walmart, but haven't had much success.
ANybody know where else I can find the 12v to 5v DC/DC adapter with the 2.5 amp output we need???

I have the Powerline car adaptor. I think I spent close to $20 at Wal-Mart for it. Some specs here:

Neither of those provide 2.4 amps, only 2.0 amps. Is that going to be a problem??? If not, that's a damn good deal!!!

2 amps is more then enough for the jb3
have you checked radio shack?
They had a couple of different ones I thought.
Wallyworld has/had a 2.0 amp one that I use and it works well.

I am not sure if that will be a problem or not. I am mainly use it for charging my JB3, but I haven't used it with this battery system. I use the 4.5V setting and haven't had a problem yet.

w/ a 5v LDO 1.5a regulator i can record and charge batteries reliably via a 7.2v battery system. Run time of the 7.2v in decreased but not significantly

I looked at Momule's steup and looks like he uses the same Powerline Car Adapter that I use. Maybe he can reply if isn't, but I think it is. Just wanted to point that out.

i had a few of those :) they work great IMO, and even have a little 'stash' pocket :)

yup Im using the powerline (model 0900-21) I glued it stuck at 4.5v so it could not switch voltage on me while it was in the bag.
I left the cig adapter on it so I can use it to charge the internal batts either off the SLA or in the car on the way to the next show , or sometimes just to top off the internals at a fest so they dont drain the SLA trying to charge them..
I have never had a problem with it at all . It cost me about $16 at wallyworld. but can be found on ebay for a bit less sometimes.
I run it in the bag and just pull out however much cable I need to reach the Jb3 depending on the set up that night.. it and 12v7Ah fit nice in the front pocket of my bag . I normally only run one of the 12v5Ah for most shows , just cause I dont need the extra juice for anything but fest's
edited: to say the "stash" pocket in the powerline adaptor has been very handy a couple times. ;)

make sure the adapta plug end it set to Center (tip) + (positive), and your good to go.. total time about an hour ..

Finished the festival battery this past weekend. Big Ray, yours is in the mail today at lunch, I will PM you here in a sec to verify info.
Here is the finished product, minus a carrying case, which I'm still hunting...
I got the battery on EBAY, $20 delivered, but Rat Shack has them on sale right now for $20. 4pin XLRs from MarkerTek, wire from Lowe's and the Car Adpater from Creative. That was the most expensive part - $40. I couldn't find one ont he site yesterday, not could I find batteries or remotes for the JB3.
Anyways, total cost, with the $40 adapter rather than the $15 WallyWorld model was $90:
Battery = 20
adapter = 40
XLRs = 10
etc. = 5
Charger = 15
Maybe I should have bought an Eco-Charge, but whatever... It was fun making...

Good idea on the epoxy...
The remote allows you to check time and start/stop recordings. I thought it would be useful, I can access my recorder without opening the bag... I really like the D100/M1 remote. The only thing is, I wish the JB3 remote had level meters like the D100/M1 remote...

only puts out DC, so you would need an inverter. It is huge and weighs a ton too. Would be better off with a 12v SLA
