SD MP2 gain pots noisy
« on: August 24, 2009, 02:13:59 AM »
i have been searching for an old thread about a DIY fix for noisy gain pots on the sd mp2... something about a hair dryer...

i THINK that one of my pots on my mp2 is starting to get fickle.  I noticed a couple of occasions on my recent recording that had some scratchy noise where it was entirely possible that i was adjusting gain at the time.

I haven't concluded this is a mp2 issue yet (could be a mic or cable or *eek* r-09 problem), but i am leaning towards it.  i will hopefully have some time to test it this week.

anyways, aside from sending this in to sd, does anyone have any suggestions on what i can do to try and fix the pot...

I don't believe you can clean those. I would contact SD and inquire about changing them. I think they have reasonable service.

just as an update... i have recorded a couple of additional times with the same set up and no problems...

my guess, the phish environment caused the problem... i know - it's not scientific... but my reasoning is that:
a) there was a lot of traffic on that aisle maybe something happened in the traffic (bag kicked, mic cable pulled),
b) there was a lot of cell phone use around me (including me) - but it didn't sound like traditional cell phone interference,
c) it was the phish... and if there is ever a sport taping environment that is the place... a shit ton of variables.

i will be using the mp2 again this weekend, although this time with the ho's in front of it... hopefully it has all worked itself out.
