Stand Alone Phonograph Amp
« on: March 04, 2019, 10:29:42 AM »
Can someone reccommend a stand-alone phono amp?   Something cheap for my 18yo who has a small stereo but no phono input.  I have the turntable.  It has basic rca plugs and a ground wire—an old Sansui so no integrated amp.  This is for really basic intro to listening to records.

I have my set up but prefer not to spend a lot of money and duplicate it in case this is just a fad.
A lot of people run a race to see who is the fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.

I have heard good things about u-turn Audio's turntables for the price. They make a an inexpensive phono pre also. No actual personal experience though, just what I have heard.

I have a Pyle PP999 that I use for my old Technics turntable.  $22 on Amazon. It's basic, no frills but it works just fine.

I bought my daughter an Audio Technica AT-LP60 and resurrected an old pair of Bose computer speakers and she loves it. She’s up to about 30 LPs and no end in sight.

Here's a list of 15 phono amps under $100 that may help in your search.  Don't forget to also check eBay.

Second on the Pyle - my buddy has one to hook up his TT to his amp that doesn't have a phono pre. Sound fine and it's really cheap.

Thanks for the suggestions.  We'll try the Pyle and see how it sounds and see if this kid will stick with vinyl.

His older sister has my old stereo and we found a nice turntable several years back for $9.00 at the goodwill.  It works great!  She will do the work to find records she likes.  Fun kid to go with to the record stores or thrift stores.

The Pyle amp worked and the turntable sounds fine.  My son likes classical music as well String Cheese Incident, Pink Floyd, and Tears For Fears to name a few.  In fact, he's been to 7 SCI shows and Tears For Fears once so far.  Plays in the youth symphony.  Anyway, we listened to one of the classical albums he has and I was please with the sound.  We'll see how it goes for him.

I've seen some DSPs with RIAA and other phono compensation curves available.
Full disclosure, I don't do vinyl...
