Title: Possible system upgrades (speakers or...)
Post by: dave w on February 19, 2010, 03:06:24 PM
It is looking probable that I will, for the time being, be unloading my recording gear and may be able to invest some of the proceeds back into payback.
I am thinking the best upgrade at this point would be speakers.  Another option is an A/D, but I already have thoughts on that.  So, I'm looking for speaker suggestions (or perhaps any suggestions as to other playback upgrades that would provide good bang for the buck).  Current system is: Rogue Stereo 90 tube amp, Sonic Frontiers SFL1 hybrid pre, sources: primarily a squeezebox duet and and a Denon Universal disc player.  Alas, my vinyl collection burned in a fire years ago, so I am turntable free.
Current speakers are Dali Suite 2.8s.

Other info:
1) budget - probably around 2K (I'd be happy to buy used).
2) I am only interested in 2 channel
3) listening position is about 10-11 feet from the wall the speakers will be on
4) must be somewhat kid friendly (having 2 little kids and no time to tape is the reason I'm looking at selling my recording gear).  The thought of smaller speakers on stands with a sub, therefore, scares me a bit - I'm almost certainly looking at full range floorstanders, though they can't be too imposing.  I'd love to try out some electrostats but that is not happening due to both space and WAF.
5) Due to kids and room size/shape, there won't be more than say a foot of clearance from the rear wall.  My current speakers are front ported, so that placement is not really a problem, but I'm not sure how well rear ported speakers would sound with that placement, but perhaps you have ideas on that as well.
  Thoughts, suggestions?
Thanks,
--Dave

to bad, the economy has  the used market for ESL's at a rock bottom.  you can pick up a set of ML Vantages for 2k and under which is a steal.  your electronics would also compliment a set os stats too...

i commend you on your decision to bone up the playback.  you are wise.  your old tapes will thank you.  good luck on finding a good match.
