Topic: What is this "pop" in my nature recording?

It was beautiful when I got home from work last night... no wind, lots of birds and creatures making noise in the marsh. I set up my rig inside, then carried it out onto the dock. Let it run for about 30 minutes then came back out. Ran Neumann u89i {Omni, Healy Method} ~> Audiomagic eXtreme ~> Sound Devices 744t {24/48}.

Anyway, there are a few "pops" throughout the recording on the left channel. This morning, I set the same rig up, placed it under my blankets and pillows and ran it for another 30 minutes. No pops.

Could it be larger bugs hitting the windscreens?

Doesn't sound like a cable, power, or recorder issue which IME have a very different sounding "pop".  Definitely sounds to me like something hitting the mic.  Bugs?  As good a guess as any.

Definitely not a bug hitting the mic, you would hear the wings buzzing up to it then thump. Sounds like a static discharge to me.

Thoughts...

Was it humid out there? But no sizzle or other weird sounds.

Was it very dry out there? Perhaps static discharge?

Rise time is about 2 ms with no other signs of mechanical vibration etc. Looks electrical in nature to me.

I've had similar stuff setting up mics outside...  Never been quite sure what it is.

Maybe swap some gear between channels to see if you can isolate it to one piece of gear?
