Title: AT831 ?'s
Post by: caymanreview on March 27, 2003, 09:46:55 PM
im contemplating purchasing a set

i had a few ?'s about the mics and the battery box

i will be running them into a m1 to start out with

picking up the battery box also

anyone use these for small or big shows?

how would they work about 20 feet from the stage, center and say 10 ft in the air, on not a huge band, just a local jamband, fairly large amps and such. no amplification on percussion or anything

on the battery box, there are a few options

im going with the adjustable bass roll-off of course

level control options--- there is one for no control, single stereo controls, and dual slider level controls.... the single is 30 and the dual is only 20???

what would you guys reccomend on that

hinged lid? what has a lid that is hinged? the battery box? why would i need a hinged lid?

thanks for any help

i think the at831 mics sound great for their price!  i've got some very nice shows done w/ these mics that i could b&p for or upload if u have a fast connection.  They should work just fine for the taping you'll be doing and they also work nice for stealthing mounted in a hat  ;)

You don't really need the level control.  that's mainly for people running sony minidisc that can't adjust the levels on the fly.  the hinged lid i think is so u can have easy access to switch your roll off settings on your battery box.  I don't really see any reason to spend money on that when you'll most likely adjust the settings before the show.  let me know if you have any other questions.

peace,
justin

Yea I have some 831's & for stealthing they sound great. Get the bass rollover option & set it at 107 for rock. (seems to work best for me) & unscrewing the box is no big deal.  No need for the levels if your using a d8.

at SP you can get setup for around $210.00

I don't have any experience with the AT831's, but I did run AT853's for 2 years or so.  Great mics, IMO, absolutely freeking fantastic for the money.  I sorta wish I would have held on to them for stealthing...

AT853's don't run too much more than the 831's, based upon my experience I'd say go for them.  If you want some samples, let me know.

I used to run the CMC-8 (at853) into a MD when I started. I then upgraded to a USBPre >  VAIO

I loved the sound of the 853 > USBPre > VAIO

for about 200 dollars, those mics are nice

I looked at them back when I bought my AT853's, and didn't think they seemed to represent any better value or sound quality; IIRC, isn't their main draw that you can get shotgun caps?  I despise shotgun mics, so that wasn't enough of a draw for me ;)

the at933 are great mics too.  i think the at933 are the same mics as the at953's only they are smaller.  i sold my at831's for the at933 a while ago b/c they were a lot smaller.
