TL> MiniME??
« on: February 09, 2004, 09:30:26 AM »
anyone run this combo?
my tax return is finally in so I think Ive decided to go the MiniME route...I can always upgrade pres later, but at least I'll have a great quality ADC

unless someone has a SBM-1 for sale :)

yeah, it seems most have run a V2>> combo or UA5 for these mics, but not straight MiniME...guess I have to be different :)

oh yeah, when i was thinking of going this route, jasonb and others recommended going v2 > mod sbm-1 instead of straight minime.

I was/am still seriously considering the v2>sbm-1 route but the key is the sbm1 which tends to disappear as soon as it appears.
I didnt have the $$ for 1 till today and of course there isnt 1 available now...I wont be purchasing the MiniME for another week or so while I hunt down the best price and hope that someone puts 1 up for sale, so theres still time to look for a sbm1.
the main thing I like about the MiniME is the ability to do 24bit...this gives me a ADC that wont necessarily show its age in another year or two and still gives me a decent(not great) preamp which can always be upgraded with another unit in front. with the sbm1, I'm locked at 16bit and will have to replace/upgrade in the future...

I dunno yet. I'm trying to plan for the future and the MiniME will give me what I need today/tomorrow with the cheaper upgrade path compared to say a V2> SBM1 today.

I love the V2 sound with the TL's but there are limited options of ADCs...theres no real limitations with regards to preamps

ya i'd say if you are planning on eventually gettinga  v2, then i'd say get the minime.  the reason i got the v2 & mod sbm-1 is b/c i don't think i'd be able to afford to get a v2 to throw in w/ the minime.  i also don't plan on going 24 bit for a while so that's another reason i went the v2 + sbm1 route.

I ran TL's>MME for one of the nights at Red Rocks Dead shows, all the other nights I ran TL's> UA5 Pmod. TL's>UA5 pmod definitely better. IMO.

did you use the same mic config in the same location both nights?
were weather variables the same each night?

just curious

Pretty much same config/location. First night being the most different. The wind was a little noticeable the fifth night, however, I ran the MME the third night, in the same config/location as night 2-5. The MME just sounded a little muddy to me. Not nearly the detail as the UA5.

If you like the V2 and want to plan for 24 bit taping, why not a V3?

its just one of those things that I cant quite put my finger on, not to mention that the preamps in the V2 and V3 are not the same

w/ the v2 & minime you can get the good pre and good a/d.  a lot of people aren't happy w/ the v3's a/d.  this is from what i've heard talked about on the board.  i've never ran the minime or v3....i'm just relaying what i've heard.

well, definately not going V2>MiniME anytime soon...it was really a either or type of situation.
V2> SBM-1...great pre and great ADC with high $$ upgrade path or,
MiniME...ok pre and great ADC with a cheaper upgrade path. . .

argh...too many options!!

To your ears at this particular venue, on this particular night, with this particular band, in that particular spot of the section, you may have thought the UA 5 sounded better. You cannot make an informed, thorough assessment on this one particular tape. Run this combo a few more times in a few different venues before making a "this sounds much better" statement. I think your results will vary greatly from that of the Red Rocks section.

Actually I have, and it didn't change the results. But thanks for the lesson, all these years I thought I knew what I was doing....

Hey, thanks for that nice response. You didn't state anything about having run it more than this one circumstance, hence my post. No need for the attitude.

Straight mme and v2->modsbm are quite similar to my ears fwiw.  The mme is much more detialed at 24 bit, I agree with the slight mud comment at 16 bit, but only at 16 bit!
