Title: right angles -- pref or better
Post by: willndmb on July 27, 2005, 01:43:38 PM: i see a lot of people here use or talk about using right angle cables

i am wondering if the right angle cables are better to use for one reason or another
rather it be connection, space, less chance of unhooking--whatever

or if its just a preference that many like

Post by: The Kilted Taper on July 27, 2005, 01:54:57 PM: Most of it's spacing and cleanliness issues, at least for me. A lot easier to work with gear when the cable only sticks out an inch or less, rather than 3" or more. Also, less chance of putting unneeded strain on the connections.

Post by: OFOTD on July 27, 2005, 03:08:18 PM: I run my V3 with right angle connectors because it allow me to not have to use a metal rack like some others do. It saves me several inched of vertical space in my bag. Also I run them on the other side (mic side) as I just like the way they look. The seems to not be as bulky looking.

So in the end it really is a preference thing. Depends on what you're running and what kind of space you have.

On the deck end for the reasons detailed above. On the mics, I find that right angle cables give a lower profile look, and sometimes helps me run DIN without a riser for one of the mics.

i think straight would be better for the ua5 and my bag

so would i want the RA for the mic to be male or female?

i think the mics need female ends and the ua5 male ends, right??

i use straight out from mics, due to using different mics in different situations, straight is more flexible for me

for me....i use RA on the PRE side, and Straight on the MIC side.

I find it easier to cinch the mic cables to the mic stand with a cable tie and still have the mics point directly forward and not sag in the shockmounts. Something about the spring effect that occurs with the loop of cable that comes out when using straight ends. When you have the cables coming straight down as with RA mic ends, you don't get that loop and spring effect, and I find it much harder to not have the back of the mics pulled down in the shock, making the front of the mic point up.

And having put together many mic trees, I don't like RA's much when it comes to clamping. The right angles and the cables coming straight down make it much harder to pack in a lot of mics on one stand. Getting 2-3 pairs of full bodied mics using RA cables packed onto a stand with another 3-4 active sets is much harder than putting up full-bodied mics with straight connectors.
