PMD 660 or Edirol R-1 (which one is better)
« on: November 08, 2005, 10:05:00 AM »
Hey all,
    I am having a tough time deciding on which one of these two recorders I should buy. I am new to taping but I am technologically inclined. What I need is some personal recommendations, pro and cons. That sort of thing. Most of the recordings I will be doing will be from a Soundboard feed till I get some goos mics.

Thanks,
Keith

Most of the whining I've heard about the PMD-660 (including from me!) has been about the mic preamps.  Line in on a stock 660 has worked just great for me.  I just got an ADV mod 660 from Oade.  It's not perfect, but it's a lot closer to perfect than the stock unit.  I've gone from "I can deal with this", to feeling that it's pretty good.

PMD-660 = 16bit.
R1 = 24bit.

(I think...)
Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

Mrosenlof - did you find that the mod made any difference on line-in recording?

I would say if you're just doing sbd recordings for now, I'd go with the R-1 as it's smaller, cheaper, and is more easily powered for longer times.
