V3 battery
« on: August 10, 2016, 06:29:44 PM »
I've been using two Impact (BPD-8000) batteries to power my V3 for about 8 years now. They've recently become unreliable but I've gotten my monies worth no doubt. What is a replacement recommendation?

You could use the same batteries as you do for your 744 if you want to. That's what I use for my V3. Just wire your cable for the V3 to a sled like the 744 batts slide in to. Very simple to wire up or you could have one of our TS cable guys do it. For me it was a no brainer since I had a few batteries for my 722 and they're relatively inexpensive.

Where did you obtain the 744-like sled?

I too have a Naztech PB15000 to use with my V3.

The sled comes from the wall chargers used to charge those type batteries. Got mine off ebay for less than $5. The sled attaches to the part that sticks in the wall. You unscrew the back and solder your cable to the contacts. Wish I had taken pics but it was quite simple and I'm not that handy with an iron.

Thanks for all the recommendations! I ended up buying Naztech BP15000 for $83.50 on eBay. Now I need the get the interconnect between the battery and the V3. Naturally, the one I've used for the Impact batteries won't fit. It's been many years now but I think Maybe Ted (or Darktrain?) made it? Where has others gotten their's?

The Memorex DVD battery I use for my V3 which is heavy as hell has finally given up holding a charge. How much does that 744 sled weigh and how long does the charge last?

sled is super light, less than 10 oz I'm sure. Runtime depends on the battery. I use a 7.4v 7200 mah battery and I run it for 3hr shows no problem. Haven't really tested it to see how long it would go.

here's a pic of the battery, sled, and a Tekkeon for the size comparison.

Less than 10 min on ebay and you should have batteries and a sled. Tgakidis or darktrain can make the cable.

this should work. You'll need a second charger to charge your batteries though.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kastar-Battery-and-Normal-Charger-Kit-for-Sony-NP-F975-NP-F970-NP-F960-NP-F950-/252592505919?var=&hash=item3acfafc43f:m:mueSS7gcqzE9IRqNMNnL05Q

here's a few pics of how it works.
Here's the unit all together.

The sled slides out.

with the sled out and flipped over.
take out 4 screws. there's two wires in there that connect to the two silver tabs you see in the pic. The tabs will be removed.
you'll take your cable that goes from the V3 and solder positive to pos and neg to neg.
I filled the case with some hot glue to stabilize the cable then put the cover back on the sled.
I'm sure one of the cable guys would do this all for you if you shipped them the sled.

So I ordered those parts and batteries and they arrived today. I figured there would be no way that I'd be able to pull this off but it seems pretty straightforward. There are even symbols for pos and neg on the front by the poles.

Its a pretty bulky form factor compared to the DVD battery when trying to cram it into a bag with the V3 but certainly less weight. Kind of like the difference between a CAugly and a CA9200. One fits better but its bigger.

Here's my question:
Do I keep the square piece that's soldered to the connections or remove it?
I assume that it is for the charger part and not important, but who knows?

Well I failed at this. I'll post pictures, but either I had a faulty wire or the wrong battery but after finishing I could get no power. The V3 still works, so I didn't fry anything. Love that giant heavy V3!

Have a look here. What have I done wrong, potentially, that makes this not work? Is it possible that my cable has just gone bad? Here's the battery and the soldered connection, but I get no power to the V3.

probably stupid questions, but have you used a voltmeter to a) confirm the battery is providing power and b) confirm that the sled is receiving power from the battery (You could tap the soldier joints with the voltmeter probes).  If so, confirm that the cable connector (that plugs into the V3) is getting power and that polarity is not reversed.

From the best I can tell it's wired up correctly assuming the blk wire with white stripe is in fact the positive. Here's another vote for using a volt meter. You'd have your answer in a minute.

Another stupid question - Is the V3 a 6v or 12v and have you verified it is set to 6v?

If the V3 has been set to operate at 12v it will not turn on if the voltage is less then about 10v or so (maybe in the 9.5v range) - there is a procedure on how to change the voltage setting (used to be posted on the Grace website)

I love this place!
I have 2 DVD batteries and regularly swap them between the V3 and R44, so I guess I'd better learn some more stuff!
This as my attempt at trying something new... guess I learned the old fashioned way! At least I have not yet fried my V3!

That's my understanding as well. It looks easy-peasy to toggle the jumpers but the manual says "These adjustments should be made only by qualified service

We have been using these

https://www.amazon.com/TalentCell-Rechargeable-11000mAh-14500mAh-26400mAh/dp/B016BJCRUO?ref_=bl_dp_s_web_8899093011

its about the size of a juice box. We still have the maxoaks but they are pretty heavy / footprint for one off shows. So we went with the above recently and using the 9v to run the 6v V3 and V2s. They run much cooler at 9v
Im sure the talentcell you linked to would be fine but I have only used the one i linked.

I thought this would be a quick calculation, but there were some snags.  A good exercise though!

The V3 manual uses a draw of 0.75 amps in their battery life calculation (assuming A/D is on and phantom is on).
https://www.gracedesign.com/support/manuals/v3_manual_RevE_online.pdf

The DR-680 manual says that phantom draws 3 mA per channel, which is just wrong.  But they give run times for Eneloop NiMH batteries (2 Ah capacity), and from there, we can get to the current draw.  They say 4 hours with 6 phantom channels, which would be 2 Ah / 4 = 0.5 amps.  Without phantom power they say 5.5 hours which would be 0.364 amps.  [So the difference of 0.136 amps across 6 phantom channels would be about 23 mA of extra current per phantom channel.]
https://tascam.com/downloads/products/tascam/dr-680mkii/e_dr-680mk2_om_vb.pdf

Since we’ll be using a TalentCell battery to feed both 9V to the V3 and 12V to the DR-680, the calculations are smoother if we convert the amps to watts:
V3 draws 0.75 amps at 9 volts = 6.75 watts
DR-680 draws 0.5 -or- 0.364 amps at 12 volts = 6 watts -or- 4.36 watts
Combined, the V3 and DR-680 use 12.75 watts -or- 11.11 watts

The smaller TalentCell battery has a 100 Wh capacity.  The manual says that you’ve got 25% left when it goes to one light.  Using that, the run time should be 6.75 -or- 5.88 hours depending on whether you’ve got phantom power turned off or are using it on all 6 channels on the DR-680.  I’m guessing that you could push it another hour or so without a problem.

The larger 132 Wh TalentCell battery will give you about 8.9 -or- 7.8 hours.

I run the larger TalentCell with 2 channels of phantom power on the DR-680 at festivals and in theory I should get 20 hours down to one light.  That sounds about right, since I rarely get to two lights when running all day.

how is that "wrong"?

currents vary quite a bit from microphone to microphone. some require up to 10mA, some as little as 1mA

Ahhh - I see your point.  That info on phantom power current draw was in a section with the text below:

Battery operation time (when used continuously)
  NiMH batteries (eneloop)
About 4 hours (6 channels of phantom power used, 3 mA per channel)
About 4.5 hours (2 channels of phantom power used, 3 mA per channel)
About 5.5 hours (phantom power not used)

I presumed they were talking about 3 mA at 12 volts since they were talking about battery power.  But that 3 mA draw spec may refer to 48 V, which makes much more sense.

First, Welcome to TS.
Second, the V3 does not have an internal battery. The 'batt' light is to measure the input signal of an older style gelcel type battery (eg EcoCharge). Most folks do not use these batteries anymore.
They use the talentcells referenced above. This one has 11,000mAh if powering the device with 9V, if using 12V it has 8300mAh. We have used them for over 12 hours with both V2's and V3's in festival situations they barely drop to 50% after that duration.
