So here's the deal... I am a musician that tapes him own shows to check out how we did. This is my gear:
Sony ECM-MS957 (stereo powered mic) -> JB3 -> FireWire -> Magix Deluxe 6
I'm getting somewhat of a 'hissing' due to the mic not pushing enough gain. I've read that a battery box is needed, but I also read that a battery box is NOT for gain. Pretty much I need to rid of the hiss. How would I go about doing this?

...and reading old posts aren't helping me much. I just need something with 1/4 or 3.5mm connectors... I don't need XLR or optical. Thanks.

Edirol UA5 has 1/4" inputs and are very affordable.

Adapters to convert 1/4" or 3.5mm to XLR, RCA, etc. or vice versa are cheap and readily available. Only need to worry about optical if you pick up a preamp that also includes an ADC.
What's your budget?

If I were you I would just get 2 hosa mit-176 line transformers. They have xlr-in and 1/4-out. Really clean gain and the pair would cost around $30.

Are you running Line-In or Mic-In?
If I remember correctly, using that Sony mic with only the AA battery gave me enough signal to run line-in on my pcm-m1 (without any hissing noise noticed AND without using transformers).
May be an issue with how you're running the JB3.
I second the recommendation for using the line transformers to get more gain.
That mic doesn't warrant the purchase of a UA-5, IMO.

My budget would be less than $100. I'll look into a transformer. The Sony mic definately doesn't would not be worth getting a UA-5, although I would just love to have one. They have a thousand uses. The mic does give me gain, but recording at low volumes like acoustic shows, is a little weak. Thank you everyone... I love this site, I should have signed up years ago.

I checked out the Hosa MIT176's, and that's just a converter. Will that actually give me a gain output volume?

It looks like just a converter, but there's a line transformer built in. Yes, it will provide gain.

If are not limited to running battery powered devices...you can buy a small 4 channel mixer.
That will help with your gain issues. And since you are a musician - it can serve a dual purpose...

Slick website, cool sounds - come play Chicago sometime! Even over 1200 kbps actual speed DSL parts of the site were slow to load and display, some not even displaying properly or completely (I think the promo material screen). Consider providing minimal non-flash info on the website with at least, perhaps, contact and tour info, accessible by skipping the Flash intro and main page.
And don't mind me too much, if I had my druthers everything on the web would be monospace text!
