V3 vs. modded UA5
« on: November 18, 2005, 04:42:06 PM »
For those of you in the know,
What would you say would be the improvements, if any, of a V3 over a Oade plus-modded UA5.
Microtech Gefell M200: M20/M21/M27 caps> Bumblebee MiAGi-II/Darktrain silver cable's/"Chuck" Belden cables> Aerco MP-2 or Busman modded DR-680 pre-amps> Darktrain cables & interconnects> Tascam DR-680 (Busman mod)

Build quality and ergos are obvious.  As for sound, I say:  trust your ears.

pretty lights. :P seriously, it depends on your budget. some say the tmod sounds similar to a v3. others swear by their w/p mods. its all about what you like to hear from your recordings. that said, the v3 has frickin sweet levels. the ua5 not so much.

The V3 has built in ANSR dither option for 16 bit recordings.

IMO, a plus of the mod UA-5's is the ability to run an on-the-fly matrix, and the cost savings.

Listen to the comp, and then do the math.  Is it worth 500-600 dollars more?

UA-5 smaller and lighter.  Can do 24/96 D to A thru digi-in.

I would like to hear my BM2p+ mod up against a V3. I like the sound of the modded UA-5 better than anything I have ever heard so far.
I just listened to a copy of moe. 10-13-05 from the schoeps>mini me > laptop and compared that to my recording setup right next to the schoeps (mine being Peluso CMC6s> BM2p+ UA-5>JB3) and I think mine sounds a thousand times better. A Mini me is no V3 I have to admit but if my mod sounds that good against the above mentioned rig I would really like to see the comparison to a V3. I hope I run next to a V3 soon so I can put the comparison out there.

I dig my UA5 (BM2).  Sounds fantastic with my 480s.  Thanks Chris!   ;D

The one additional benefit of the UA-5 I can see is the additional RCA inputs in the back, make a sbd matrix really easy.

yeah, that is def an advantage. if the v3 only had some rca inputs like that :'( it may be the perfect pre/ad
