Topic: Stuff Between the R-09 and Mics??

I've been researching my next setup for a while now, and have some questions about phantom power and mic pre's.  I've settled on the following:

beyerdynamic mc930 -> some phantom power -> some mic pre -> R-09 (line in)

I think that the phantom power can be solved with the Denecke PS-2 and the mic pre can be the Church Audio ST-9100..resutling in:

beyerdynamic mc930 -> Denecke PS-2  -> Church Audio ST-9100 -> R-09 (line in)

Does anyone see anything obviously wrong with this setup?  Is there a cheaper, but just as good, way to do the same thing in regards to phantom power and mic pre's?

It might be possible for that setup to work.  You would need hack off the xlrs on the ps2 or get an adapter to go 1/8" or mini-xlr (depending on the Church preamp model)

Even though it might work, it is a bad idea.  All of the items you have listed are designed for ballanced 48v phantom power mics.  The Church preamp is designed for unballanced 9v mics.  I am not sure, but I think the impedance would be off.

A UA5 would be a good option, but I don't think the R-09 have a digital input. 

A Grace V2 would be a great box to bridge that gap between the mc930's and the r-09..

I think you should do a bunch more research.....

I've used the R09 with lots of other mics, like AT822, AKG CK91, etc.  It sounds *great*.  I would only bother with a preamp if it is really good, like the V2/V3.  Also the Beyers are really hot (without the pad) so the R09 does not have to apply much gain.

I've been experimenting with powering the Beyers with two 9V batteries (18V total) and running straight into the R09.  It *seems* to work well.  More testing needed though .

Thanks for the lightening fast replies. 

I'll take the advice to run them without the external pre.  I would like to avoid the cost of the V2/V3.  Though I can't find the post now, I read a bad review about the R-09 pre somewhere. Hence, me thinking it was best to have something.

The SD mp2 or mix-pre is tiny....and works well with the r-09.

Ditto on the MP-2    Also a Beyer MV-100 would be nice.  I know of one coming available soon if interested.

Not that familiar with the Beyer mics, but an MP2 can be had used in the $300 - $400 range, and would give excellent sound quality in a tiny package. I loved mine when I ran MBHOs.

I would follow Richards advice and go right in with the PS-2 my preamp is not designed to handle a low impedance balanced input. If you were running my mics or any of the small AT mics or DPA mics I would say get my preamp. But dont bother with my preamp if your running balanced audio out.
