Topic: Most reliable USB audio transfer?

<u new laptop has no PCMCIA...what is the most reliable USB style device for transferring my dat masters to my laptop?  I was using a VX pocket...but I can't use that with the new notebook

there's that edirol UAD-1 (or something like that), small and cheap, but not bit-perfect. Does the job though, from what I have heard.

Sorry, not sure what else is out there for USB.

I've been using a UA-5 with reasonable success.   I'm told USB can't quite hang with 24.96 though.

ua-5 is not bit-perfect either.  I believe the m-audio transit (optical i/o) and m-audio usb audiophile (coax) to both be bit-perfect usb options.

what kind of laptop?
I see a vaio listed in your gear; all Sonys have a firewire port (sony calls it iLink? its also called 1394)

the sonicport, aka DATport was bit perfect for usb (24/48k) but you have to run win98 or 2in2k.

the m-audio device is troublesome, i've had a friend who's been struggling for a while...

The Sound Devices USBPre is a rock-solid USB 1.0 device that will do up to 24/48...if you can find one for sale.

Seems like there should be a USB or Firewire > PCMCIA slot adapter out there somewhere...does such a thing exist?

That way you could continue to use you VX pocket.

If you do have firewire, the M-Audio Firewire 410 is a decent option.

i have an ESI U24 which is bit perfect and can do 24/96 although with dats that won't even matter.  it can do a/d conversion also which would be good for 24/96

Agree, I used to use mine for DAT transfers and was happy with it. But solely as a DAT transfer device is it a little overkill with the mic preamps and variety of inputs on there.

i have the m-audio audiophile usb. the driver for windows is squirrely at best...i have gotten it to stick now, i think. no problem using it with mac, of course.

Keep an eye on ebay for these, mine went for $350 a year or so ago.

These are nice if you want to take a 24 bit SBD patch at a show with your laptop. Tape, line, and mic inputs with -15db switchable pads.

48 KHz max input though.
