SoundProfessionals CMC-2, AT831 questions
« on: January 08, 2005, 01:15:34 PM »
On the soundprofessionals' website, they have SP-AT831 and SP-CMC-2. Is the only difference that the SP-AT831 mics are made by SP and the CMC-2's are made by AT, or is there some other difference?  Spec links are below.  Is it worth the extra $60 to pick up the CMC-2's?

SP-AT831 http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?item=SP-AT831&type=store&template=specifications

SP-CMC-2 http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?item=SP-CMC-2&type=store&template=specifications

TIA.

I would take the AT831.  I would not buy the SP (or other) produce unless they tell you exactly what caps are in there!

I've been meaning to ask SP about these.  I have got straight answers in the past.  I just haven't got around to asking.

I'm looking for the same mics.
I asked SP and this is the reply I got:

"The only difference between the old CMC-2's and the newer version is
that we use our own mic elements in production of the newer line opposed to
Audio Technica's elements. As for the 4's and 8's, they are out of stock
indefinitely. We do expect to produce more as soon as possible"

More info about AT and SP produced mics in this thread:

Hope it helps

Definitely need to pick up the SP-CMC-2's with AT caps, anything less than that, you are wasting money on SP caps which won't be as good.

Thanks. Didn't see the other thread. Looks like I'll probably go w/ the cmc-2's then.

I'm glad I waited a day.

You will be pleased, if you want to hear samples to go Archive.org and type in SP-CMC-2 or AT831 in the search, and listen away! Enjoy.

are the CMC-2s any better at high SPLs than the CMC-8s?  i have been having problems iwth my CMC-8s in high SPL situations.  i might need to replace my battery box, but i reallythink it is my mics.

SoundProfessionals CMC-2 (AT831) questions

Ok, I'm playing around w/ my new mics.  I'm running SP-CMC-2 > SP-SPSB-1 > JB3.  I'm taping a CD playing in my stereo.  I cranked my stereo up pretty loud.  I could hear it in every room in the house.  I had the gain on the battery box all the way up, and the gain on the JB3 set to +12.  The mics were about 3 feet from the speakers.  However, the levels on the recording are pretty low.  I understand a concert will be much louder than my test, but this just seems really low.

Does this seem normal to you guys?

Here's a screenshot of the levels in Cool Edit Pro.
I also attached a 10 sec unedited mp3.

Levels look a little low, but you really need to try it in a live situation. I usually record at +3 to +6 gain. My aim is to avoid that much post gain (this is usually 2-4dB).

One of the other people I am in touch with on this board also reports low levels from their SP battery box. Sample sounds fine, btw.

To the person who tried the CMC8s, I've just made my first recording with them (old AT933s using AT853 caps) of a loud rock gig - they output a much louder signal, but distort a little. I also recorded the gig with the rig below so am interested how the .wavs compare. Phantom power or jk_labs box would apparently fix this.
