SP-C4 Question??? What caps are what???
« on: October 13, 2005, 05:59:29 PM »
Here's a newbie (aka dumb) question for anyone who has ever run the SP-C4s...

What caps are Card and what caps are Omni???

I just bought my first set of mics and before this had only ever run patches or a set of SP-C1s rentals... The set I bought (albeit brand new from a retailer) didn't come w/ any instructional manual... As anyone who's run them knows, the caps don't have any sort of indicator on them...

I took a look at the box and the caps w/ the holes near the base, have what looks like a diagram of the polarity field of a Card. The other has a circular diagram or symbol, which I would assume would mean Omni... But first and foremost, there's no symbol or diagram on the actual caps, and more importantly I don't want to just guess and be wrong...

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

My first rig:
SP-C4>Apex AA14>JB3... (and will someday soon include a UA-5; all in good time!!!)

Thx again everyone

The caps with the holes are the cards.  The caps with out the holes are the omni's.

If you got them brand new, you should have gotten a manual...

The new ones have the pictures depicting the card/omni on the caps as well.  The omni's have the full circle on them.  The cards have the peach shape on them.

Thx guys... Much appreciated....

I know, I thought that it was weird that there was no manual... Maybe I'll have to go back to the store where I got them to find out if they have it kicking around  somewhere...

As for the diagrams on the caps, they're not there at all... I don't know if the mics are just older stock that the store still had hanging around or not but they were their last set (or maybe the only set that they ever had for that matter) and they didn't have the diagrams... Eitherway, I saw the diagrams on the caps on the box and that's what made me guess what I had, but I wanted to be sure... And thanks to you folks, I now know for sure...

Thx again folks

If the store doesn't have the manual, it shouldn't be too hard to get Studio Projects to send me one, should it???

I looked around online and couldn't find one on their site... They only seemed to have the specs and the frequency response chart... Does anybody know anywhere else I could find one, or should I just contact them by phone or mail???

Thx guys

Sounds like you got the answer right there.  Give `em a call.  I would assume they would be more than happy to provide you with some documention.

However, other than the freq. curves and spec's (which are on the site), what more info would you need?

I probably wouldn't need much more, but you never know when the manual will come in handy...

It can't hurt to have one...

Again, thx folks

as I recall the manual was basically a general manual for all the sp mics and pretty much had the same info that their website spec sheets had, if I am wrong someone please correct me

That is correct.  The manual is of minimal use.

Also, for Paul, it sounds like you got older stock.  The original issue of the mics did not have the diagrams on them, which apparently led to a good deal of confusion and led to them adding the diagrams for subsequent lots.  It is confusing.  Without knowing anything about sound engineering or mic technology and with no diagram, I would have thought the caps with the holes were the omnis (I don't know why - to better capture the sound from the sides and back, I guess...), and of course, I would have been completely wrong.

Good luck with your new mics.  Can't beat C4's in that price range.

My first rig:

What, may I ask, is an Apex AA14? Google gives me nothing and neither does the Apex website.
Open: SP C4/MSH-1O > Nick's Picks hydra cables > BM2P+ UA-5 > iRiver H120
Optional: Giant Squid cards > iRiver H120

Apex AA14 are the Apex line matching transformers... Just something to hold me over until I can afford a UA5
