Topic: Problem setting up X/Y with C1000S

I have a pair of C1000S mics (in AT8415 shocks) and an AKG stereo bar.  I was going to try and run them in X/Y for a show tonight but I can't get it exactly in place.

The mics are so big that if you run them both on top of the stereo bar, you can't get one of them to go underneath the other one (even if you mount one low and one high on the shockmount).  If I mount one on the bottom of the stereo bar and one on top, I can get them to be vertically coincident but there is about 4" of space between the mics (even if I put them low on the shockmounts).  Is that way too much space?

I also tried mounting the stereo bar on the side of my light stand because the mounting thread has a vertical and horizontal position, but the weight of the bar, mounts and mics was too much for the thread and it won't stay tight enough without slipping.

Is there a trick I'm missing here?  Anyone have any tips?  Please don't say I have to buy the Shure vert bar

You could get a rapido or atlas lo-2b to give you the height you need on one side.  1 rapido might not be enough but the atals should be fine

Can those be had at a B&M store like Guitar Center?

or turn one side of the bar up w/ the screws,a nd the other side down, just flip one side

4" vertical spacing won't have a significant effect on the sound as long as the mics' capsules are aligned in the same vertical plane.

I'd run 'em x/y with the 4" space and start experimenting with "better" ways to set 'em up after you determine whether you like how they sound x/y

I'll second this opinion.  Maybe 4" isn't the best, but I would bet they sound just fine that way.  I would also like to have them closer for my own satisfaction, but I don't think you need to be in a hurry to find a solution while running them as they are.  The vertical plane alignment is the important one for X/Y, the spacing isn't nearly as important.

I ran a set of C1000s for almost 7 years, never with shock mounts, often X/Y.  Good stuff.

Favorite pattern these days ... DIN 90.

I actually agree with this comment.  The C1000S are bright mics to begin with.  Also, they have internal shockmounts, so it isn't really necessary to run those AT's.
