Topic: How does this first "rig" sound...imput needed!

Here is what I think i am going with.


AKG C1000 > Ua-5 (not sure if I should go with oade mod or not) > NJB3.....


Or go with

Octava MC012  >  "  " > "  "


How do you think these will do...any problems?  

Which would you go for?

What kind of Cables would work best ( I have zero cable making skills.)

I would go with oktava>ua-5>jb3. Get the oade mod if you can. You can mod the ua5 yourself

Listen, Listen, Listen....surf on over to archive.org and check out some shows....there are plenty of mk012 and c1000 sources around...I wouldn't trust anyone who tells you what mics to buy everyone hears something different...that being said, I love my oktavas...I pulled a *great* tape on tuesday night with em...let me know if you want to hear it

spend the majority of your $$$ in the mics, and be sure to get the ones you want.  If you get C1000s, chances are you'll be selling them in 2 months (since that's what everyone else on this site did)

My $.02 from another thread:

Just have to chime in here...  I love my C1000s.  I sort of defaulted into them since I already owned a pair which I was using as drum overheads in my PA rig.

There are a number of reasons C1000s make great starter mics:

1. They're nearly indestructable and are built like tanks -- which means you can get them from pretty much anywhere.  Many other inexpensive mics (like the Oktavas) have very poor build quality and quality control, which means you have to get them from a supplier who picks through the trash to get you something decent.  They charge for this.

2. They come with hypercardoid adapters -- which means you get two patterns to play with from the start.

3. The capsules are internally shockmounted -- which means you save $100+ on shockmounts.

4. They take 9v batteries internally -- which means you save $50-$100+ on a battery-powered phantom power supply, and...

5. Everyone knows about #1 above, so you can probably use them for a year or two then sell them for darn near what you paid for them when you're ready to upgrade.

That said, there are lots of people who hate C1000s and love other things, and you might be one of them.

If you're interested, I'd be willing to B&P my Galactic 10/30/2003 (Austin, TX) which I recorded with my C1000s > PB224 > AD-20 > NJB3 so you can get a listen.

I didn't sell my c1000s for 9 months and I got all but $25 back when I sold them

i had mine for about 8 months and loved them with the ad-20, that put me back about 600, not a bad price tag for a decent setup IMHO, c1000's are a bit underrated, true, they lack bass, but the akg highs sparkle, and with the included hyper cap, that cant be beat for 300 a pair
