Can you unscrew the Neumann LC3 cable?
« on: October 08, 2011, 07:21:24 PM »
I'm curious if you can unscrew the cable from the end portion of the LC3 cable that the capsule screws onto.  I found a mount that would likely fit perfect but I can't get it over the plastic portion of the cable.  Anyone tried it?

LC3 or LC3-KA?

The end pieces are single pieces and the cable is non-detachable - unless you are talking about the old version in which a Lemo connector plugs into an adaptor (in which case just unplug the Lemo).

But what are you trying to do?

I know of several clips that would not need anything taking apart.

The rubber strain relief boot just pops in/out of a groove inside the metal protrusion on the back of the capsule connector.  It's actually the same strain relief made by Lemo for their connectors.

I know this is an old thread, but i just tried to disassemble the capsule side connector of a LC3 cable and did not have any success... i managed to unscrew the strain relief but have no idea how to proceed. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Dirk

I am not sure the capsule side can be easily disassembled. Or at least, I haven't found an easy way.

The KM side can be easily disassembled to shorten cable lengths. There is a piece in the threads, similar to a snap ring, that unscrews and the whole thing comes apart.

Thanks for your reply, yes, shortening would be no problem, but i need longer cables, so i ordered some CA-0363 mini star quad from best-tronics and would like to solder the LC3 connectors to it...

Ask the question on the Neumann Forum, where you will get the answer direct from the horse's mouth.

The reply from Martin Schneider at Neumann (Berlin) is on http://www.neumann.com/forums/view.php?site=neumann&bn=neumann_mictec&key=1409212258 .

Cross-posting from Neumann's site:

Quote
the circular connector on the capsule side is snapped in, so there is a high risk of breaking it, when trying to snap it out.

Thus, attempts of disassembly are only recommended in the case of an actual cable failure.

Best regards,
Martin Schneider / Neumann Mic. Development

Was hoping this wasn't the case, but it makes sense and is going to be tough to get them apart. Looking at mine, there is nothing to grip or latch onto from the top side and the contact rings are delicate enough that I wouldn't want to jam anything between them that would be used as a lever for risk of breaking them. Moreover, I would never attempt to try to pry out the platic snap ring by jamming something between it and the colette threads. That is a surefire way to damage the delicate threads as the metal of the threads is extremely thin.

It might be possible to push the snap ring out from the cable entry port, but I can't be sure. I believe there is a small circuit board inside the colette, so you're not pushing the plastic snap ring out directly. I don't think breaking the circuit board would be the end of the world, assuming you can otherwise safely disassemble the colette.

On a positive note, Mr. Schneider did not say that they are glued in. MBHO active cables are designed similarly to the Neumann active cables ala a plastic plastic ring that snaps in place, but they're unfortunately glued in place. From first hand knowledge, trying to disassemble them can easily result in total destruction of all plastic parts and using heat or solvents to break the glue is very risky.

Neumann used a Lemo plug in the earlier versions - so, if you just want a longer cable, how about leaving the cable as is and to cut the cable - wire the extension into the other end, and to join it up with a Lemo plug and socket of to the same spec. that Neumann used. ???

That's what i will do now. Thanks John.
