Hi, I made the post about how I desperately need monitors for an upcoming studio project, but I do know my dad has these (they have to be better than the $20 computer speakers, I'm thinking high-end consumer gear), but I'm wondering if these will hold me over until I can put a reasonable amount of dough into playback.
Can you decipher these specs:
Type 3 way 3 sp. bass-reflex
Speakers
woofer 38 cm (14-31/32") cone type
midrange 12 cm (4-23/32") cone type
tweeter 5.5 cm (2-5/32") cone type
Impedence 8 (horse-shoe-lookin symbol)
Input level music 200 w
Output sound pressure level 93 dB/W (1.0 m)
Crossover frequencies 3 kHz, 6 kHz
Frequency Range 42 Hz~20 kHz (-10 dB)
32 Hz~22 kHz (-16 dB)
Dimensions (WxHxD) 451 x 797 x 328 mm
(17-3/4" x 31-3/8" x 12-29/32")
Weight 15 kg (33.1 lb.)
I'm guessing that the fact that these use standard speaker cable is limiting enough. Any way to improve (buy hq speaker cable) or even mod these? oh yeah, don't be afraid to be harsh if these suck...
thanks and multiple +t's in advance...

There's not much there for specs, but the horse-shoe-lookin thing is the ohm symbol, which of course is impedence. I don't think there's anything that would tell of the actual quality.

D'oh, got in right before me Moke :P. Yeah these won't even compare to your computer speakers but I would throw $160 at sennheiser hd580's (like Culbreth mentioned in the other thread) and get a decent
mic HEADPHONE (damn this crack is good ;)) amp if you have some $$.

yah, I have the technics su-v95 amplifier that came with the set. the cable inputs are the locking ones where you pull that button up and stick the bare wire in, then you release the button and it clamps down (wow, I must sound like a moron). so I guess that 14 gauge radio shack cable is the answer, unless you can recommend something better...
anyhoo, I guess for 24-bit playback I could run terratec ewx 24/96 > optical > wmod ua-5(adv playback setting) > rca(?) > technics su-v95amp > technics sb-2685
wow, it looks like a cool playback chain but it's really not...
hey thanks again for the help, I'd triple +t if I could but one will have to do...

cool, I'm guessin rat shack will have em. man, thanks moke, this really saves my ass.

Get some proper terminations. That would make a big difference. There are some nicely manufactured ends that will fit into those amp clips quite nicely.
Really? What if you just tinned them? I don't see how buying terminations is that much of a difference from sticking in twisted speaker wire.
