Near-Field Monitors or Tower/Bookshelf Speakers?
« on: May 14, 2005, 08:16:35 PM »
ias much as i know about taping, i know VERY little bout playback

i usually do all of my editing very close to the comp, so would i be better off buying a decent pair of active or passive near field-monitors, or just saying screw it, and buy a nice pair of tower speakers and a sub

also, w/ the near-field monitors id also be buying a nice sub

i have a JVC RX-6000V receiver, so what ya'll think would pair decent w/ that would be great ;)

thanks,
 bean

You're at both ends of the spectrum by looking at towers and near-fields.

If you master and listen solo, nearfields keep you very intimate to the music and the inherent spacial sounds in the recording.
The bigger and louder the speaker, the more you will hear the affects of the room that you are in, and more of the room gets filled with sound.

Don't try to entertain a few guests with a pair of nearfields, unless you're all very friendly    ;)
Don't expect to find the phase or passband problem as easily with a 10-foot spaced set of towers.
Nearfields = headphones that don't require crossfeed, IMHO.

Caveats -   Even monitors need room treatments.  Not all monitors are near-fields

Hope that helps.

Cheers.

should i buy a decent pair of near-fields for myself for editing and then a pair of tower speakersfor normal playback ???

what would you do ohm ???

also, what speakersa do you recomend for either application ???

Different tools for different jobs.  I'm not an expert on playback either.

For me:
Party = the Mission 5 towers   :P   -loud, colored, but enjoyable enough. I'm probably moving on from them soon.
For Summer it's a pair of deck speakers and on a clear day, I drag out a small sub.

Any critical listening is done on headphones, and on an old pair of monitors then, in my house and car.

I'm not good enough to trust my ears and only one set of speakers.
When I thought that I had a perfect EQ of a recent show, I played it in the car and it sounded like ass.
Back to the drawing board.  I am learning how to shape the bottom end. That seems to be where all my problems stem from.
Room treatments have helped alot.

One thing that I've noticed about an excellent master, like DSOTM, Trey Album, new Sam Bush, Steeley Dan, Allison Krauss, etc.
No matter where I play it, it always sounds good. Even on a boombox it is as good as the playback system.
A bad eq will fail somewhere and show it's evil side.
