Recording Level problems with Marantz pmd 671
« on: September 16, 2007, 11:54:46 AM »
Hello guys,

I just got a Marantz pmd 671.  My setup is Nak CP-701 > Coax Cable > Battery Box > RCA

I just set this up yesterday and when trying to record my loud stereo I am just getting hardly any levels at all via stereo line in.  I think I have checked all settings such as rec level switch on manual and mic att on 0db.  I cannot figure it out...  I have to put my level knob at 9 or 10 just to get a low signal..  something seems to be wrong..  Anyone out there ever hear of this?  Thanks alot!

When using a battery box is it best to go RCA in or XLR in to a Marantz?  I guess what I am trying to say is how much gain does a battery box give?  enough to utilize Line in or do you still need to go mic in?

Does a battery box supply gain?  I thought its sole purpose was to supply energy to the electret to allow it to accommodate higher SPL's.  Am I wrong here???

I guess you're right. I might be wrong also, but bbox doesnt give any gain, only power to the mics.
A preamp will give gain.

Just raise your gain on the marantz (if that's possible, not familiar with that unity), maybe your stereo isnt loud enough.

So it would make sense that a Battery Box is simply providing power to the mics and NO gain.  I guess you would in fact need to go into the Mic input on the marantz.

Eric, go in to the XLR input but make sure the 48volt Phantom power on the marantz is off.
