Title: solid desktop computer speakers?
Post by: cbd on May 13, 2013, 11:37:02 AM
about to switch offices and to a new work computer. The old Cambridge soundworks speakers I have had for the last 8 years or so are really finicky and the sub gets stuck in some type of feeds back if you even brush against the mini plug and takes a few days to work itself out. Figuring its time for a replacement/upgrade.

In an office setting with other folks so don't need anything extravagant but would like some solid sound that improves on the shitty speakers built into the Dell monitor.

up to the $150 range is what I'm thinking but I'm open to other suggestions

thanks, as always

I have the Audioengine A2's that I like. Might be a little overkill for an office, but they sound nice. $200 (so a little over budget).

I should get something nicer for my office. I can't let them rip, so I wouldn't need anything super nice. I just bought some cheapies at Best Buy a few months ago...and they are already fubar'd (volume sometimes decides to go full blast on it's own). Also just got a new phone system at work that shows a call coming in on my computer screen, so maybe I should get a nice headphone amp and some good cans. :)

I like these a lot:

Though, at $130 right now, they're a little pricey compared to their usual price tag of around $100-$110.

Though, if you're really just trying to upgrade from built-in speakers, you don't have to spend anywhere near that much.  I use these at work and, at the volume I can listen at work, I think they sound great:

overkill for what you need but the current price/bid is difficult to beat; anyway, worth keeping an eye on

I use cambridge soundworks computer speakers too and find they sound quite nice for an office environment -- you might want to first try spraying some contact cleaner (radioshack?) into the miniplug jack and see if it solves your problem?

Without a doubt the audioengine a2s. The best $200 I have spent in a long time. Pair them with an audioengine d1 each and you have a sweet setup, but even without the fact they sound great.

Third on the Audioengine A2. Nothing sounds better for the price. I use mine with an Audioquest Dragonfly DAC for up to 24/96 playback in the smallest footprint possible.

I was shopping for Audioengine speakers a few weeks ago and noticed that their web site lists refurbished A2's for $159 a pair with free shipping. You could go for that and save some money, especially if other online deals do not include shipping costs.
